*************************************************************** 9th Maryland Workshop on Very High Speed Networks December 14-15, 1998 *************************************************************** Maryland Center for Telecommunications Research University of Maryland Baltimore County Supported by CISCO, Nortel Networks and CESDIS/NASA The Maryland Center for Telecommunications Research (MCTR) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) will hold the 9th Maryland Workshop on Very High Speed Networks (VHSN '98) on December 14-15, 1998. The Workshop will be held in the Ballroom of the University Center on the UMBC campus. The goal of the workshop is to provide a forum where researchers and developers can meet to exchange ideas and report on leading- edge developments in the area of high speed networks. Each of the previous workshops attracted approximately 150 researchers representing academia, industry and government. The two day meeting will include invited speakers and contributed presentations. Papers on selected presentations will appear in a special issue of the Journal of High Speed Networks. A registration fee of $350 will include two lunches and conference proceeding. I posted a summary from home last night, but I haven't seen it come through yet so I'm reposting this slightly revised edition. Thanks to everyone that responded to my query about mailing lists on data center design. It turns out that there is already a list dedicated to this purpose: send a message to majordomo(a)shorty.com with "subscribe datacenter" in the body. There is a companion mailing list hosted on the same server called "dce" that is for trading and/or selling used data center equipment. Thanks to Robbie Honerkamp for running these lists and pointing them out to me. Thanks also to the kind folks that offered resources to run a mailing list. Jeff

The backhoe is the usual suspect. And this week the U.S. government is launching its Y2K awareness campaign. Texas network facilities are still drying out. None of which I really want to think about at the moment (my brain is fried on appletalk and who cares about CLNS). But does anyone have predictions for next year's Rodent Of the Year? A couple of years ago it was a wayward Stanford rat which blacked out a bit of the net in San Francisco. Although some conspiricy theoriests claim the rat was made a scapegoat. The rat did get a T-Shirt. I think this year's winner was a hungry gopher which gnawed through some fiber optic in New Mexico. Do sharks still like to chew on trans-oceanic cables? LessonsLearned: Did you know standby generator makers have a universal key for the maintenance hatches on your generator sitting outside your building. All 'authorized' service people all over the country have it. How many folks knew there was a black market for generator starting batteries? How many folks have ever gone outside to their generator and found the battery gone? When was the last time you checked? How many folks have tamper switches on their generator panels? Data Center Design Mailing List?

I've been extremely interested in the discussion that has happened lately regarding design considerations for data centers. I'm interested in having some more detailed discussions on this subject but I'm not sure that NANOG is the best place for such a discussion. If there isn't a list already out there for this purpose I'd be willing to host a mailing list on a system of mine (assuming that enough people participate). Comments? Jeff

I saw these mentioned a while ago, do people still use them? We have one we no longer need (seems a waste to bin it), would it be useful to anyone for spares? It's an 8000-00 rev c chassis with 3 * 4 port 10M AUI cards 8000-101 and the more useful bit a 8000-119 ATM card. Internet2 project

Hi, I'm a senior at the University of Pennsylvania. Myself and two other students are currently working on our senior design project. We are trying to design a process/method for the handling of trouble tickets for Internet2. Some of the issues we are trying to address are: tying existing trouble ticketing systems from various universities together; interaction between universities, GigaPoPs, and the 2 ISPs (Qwest and VBNS); structure of the ticketing system (access rights, handling procedures, etc. For those of you familiar with I2, we would be very grateful for any feedback you could provide. In addition, any information that you could provide concerning trouble ticket systems for high speed WANs would be greatly appreciated.
