The report is split into sections: 0) General Status List the route table history for the last week, list any possibly bogus routes seen and give some status on ASes. 1) Gains by aggregating at the origin AS level This lists the "Top 30" players who if they decided to aggregate their announced classful prefixes at the origin AS level could make a significant difference in the reduction of the current size of the Internet routing table. This calculation does not take into account the inclusion of holes when forming an aggregate so it is possible even larger reduction should be possible. 2) Weekly Delta A summary of the last weeks changes in terms of withdrawn and added routes. Please note that this is only a snapshot but does give some indication of ASes participating in CIDR. Clearly, it is generally a good thing to see a large amont of withdrawls. 3) Interesting aggregates Interesting here means not an aggregate made as a set of classful routes. What sounds like "fruitless bitching" to you will serve as useful information for other people out there, who are in the process of selecting service providers. This is a *open* forum that people bring realities like these publicly. You are entitled to speak for yourself, and if it sounds like what you inferred, you are subscribing to the wrong list. Just do a "unsubscribe". One of the intent of this open list is to make aware of realities of ISPs around, beyond the glare of the press and marketing. And using words like "fruitless bitching" does not make your opinion more potent to anyone, unless they hold a lot of Exodus stock (: Do you?. Try to refrain from unnecessary language. ISPs in the US should obviously consult their lawyer, and should be aware of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. There are several steps an ISP must follow to preserve their immunity under the law. The DMCA sets out how complaints must be filed with the ISP, and the response the ISP must take including how they remove web sites. ISPs which do not follow the law may be held liable. Personally I think the DMCA has some constitutional flaws, but it is the law as it currently stands. Although it may seem strange to use a copyright law to deal with an apparently fraudulent web site, these scams usually involve some use of copyrighted material without authorization. It likely also violates several other laws. One advantage of using the DMCA is it doesn't require a court order to get the web site removed. But that is up to Value.Net's lawyers to determine how best to proceed. You can find out more by asking your lawyer and the web site http://www.loc.gov/copyright/onlinesp/ As far as I can tell 9 Net Ave has not registered with the US Copyright Office as an online service provider. Of course there is no requirement for ISPs to be licensed or registered in the US. But an ISP may not be able to avail itself of all the legal protections of online service providers if it doesn't register. DMCA registered agents are NOT the place to send spam complaints, security or other AUP violations which don't involve the use of copyrighted materials. The problem with co-location facilities operated by the carriers themselves is a lack of many types of diversity. Bringing an AT&T line into a UUNET facility, or a Sprint line into a GTEI facility can be a problem and sometimes actively discouraged by the operator. Owning your own fiber doesn't mean you have a clue how to design or operate a co-location facility (or even an IP network). So-called neutral facilties like Equinix and maybe PAIX help with carrier diversity. But even then I would consider putting my backup servers in a different co-location facility than my primary servers. Although co-location has become an important and growing part of the business; many of the "older" (in Internet years, 1 or 2 years) facilities weren't designed or operated to meet what customers are now expecting. Two words: MAE-East, Garage. People are learning how to build these facilities. I've been very impressed with several facilities built in the last year. Exodus Chief Executive Ellen Hancock says its relationship with eBay is in good shape. eBay spokesman Kevin Pursglove declined to say whether it was mulling a move of its primary Web servers but says that a top priority is to figure out where to house a key backup system.
