Intelligent IGP Link Costing Algorithms?

Does anyone use intelligent algorithms for determining IGP costs? It's a widely academic topic on solving a NP-Hard problem, but I've found most providers tend to stick to simple functions based on RTT and link capacity. With bandwidth costs becoming more and more reasonable, it also seems to have been a simple "get bigger pipes" between point A and B solution. However, with budgets being tighter, I would assume some more thought has been put in to using more intelligent methods of traffic optimization. (briefly ignoring the MPLS TE "solution") An added twist appears to be that a full demand matrix is difficult to build without large systems of flow collection. I'm curious if the problem can easily be approached without full insight in to this data. (per link usage yes, but without end-to-end flows) I've seen a few modeling applications, but nothing that attempts to solve the general optimization problem. Thoughts? Is there a need for something like this? Are there existing effective solutions? Thanks, Joel Krauska

Thought I'd pass along the below: GLOBAL CROSSING RELEASES FREE IP ADDRESSING SOFTWARE TOOL Global Crossing released a free software tool designed to help ISPs and other organizations manage and assign IP address space to customers more efficiently. The software tool creates a streamlined allocation process and provides a method for easily and accurately auditing existing address space usage, enhancing the ability of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) tables to manage router information. The software was originally developed by Ben April, a Global Crossing network engineer, to help allocate more than 2 million IP addresses in parcels that range in size from two to four addresses up to thousands of addresses in the most mathematically conservative way possible. Global Crossing said its decision to release the tool for free is part of a larger effort to extend the life of IPv4 until IPv6 becomes broadly available. Fiber Cut Yesterday

There was a fiber cut on DukeNet yesterday in NC between Greensboro and Mebane. Everything was repaired by 4am this morning according to them. I've checked their site as well as Jared's NOC list and any *nic and ARIN contact info to no avail. I'd appreciate a phone number if someone can provide such. We're under what appears to be an attempted DOS attack from a DSL customer of theirs. tia, brian

South Florida outage

I'm in South Florida, on a DS3 from XO. I just experince about 10 mins ago a brief internet connectivity loss. Lasted 2-3 mins. I couldn't leave the XO network. Anyone else experince this?

I'm told that Bell Canada has experienced a switch failure which has taken out a good chunk of Toronto/Ontario.
