On behalf of the NANOG Program Committee and Merit I'm pleased to announce that an updated Agenda is available and posted at: http://www.nanog.org/meetings/nanog45/agenda.php We're excited about the quality of the agenda and we hope you are, too. I want to thank all of the members of the Program Committee who worked hard to recruit, review and select the presentations and tutorials that make up this program. I also want to thank everyone who submitted a proposal. The quality and variety seemed very high this time around. Please note that there remain a very small number of slots open for late-breaking or especially topical presentations, so if the Internet melts down completely between now and January, feel free to submit a presentation explaining what happened. Lighting Talk slots will officially open after the first of the year. If you have not already registered for the conference and reserved your hotel room, now is a great time to do that. See http://nanog.org/meetings/nanog45/ and in particular https://nanog.merit.edu/registration/ to get started. Remember that Hotel expenses are fantastically low this time, with rooms as cheap as $104 and cheap flights are still available to the SDQ airport. The overall cost of this NANOG should be the same or lower as previous ones. I mention this because I know that many travel budgets are tight and I hope that this information might be useful to your management. I look forward to seeing all of you in Santo Domingo. Hi, Further to my email two and a half hours ago, it seems that the prefix causing OpenBGPd speakers to die is 91.207.218.0/23, which is originated by a 4-byte ASN speaker. OpenBGPd is checking AS4_PATH to ensure that it contains only AS_SET and AS_SEQUENCE types, as per RFC4893. When processing the UPDATE for 91.207.218.0/23 it sees : 91.207.218.0/23 Path Attributes - Origin: Incomplete Flags: 0x40 (Well-known, Transitive, Complete) Origin: Incomplete (2) AS_PATH: xx xx 35320 23456 (13 bytes) AS4_PATH: (65044 65057) 196629 (7 bytes) RFC4893 is clear on the matter : " To prevent the possible propagation of confederation path segments outside of a confederation, the path segment types AS_CONFED_SEQUENCE and AS_CONFED_SET [RFC3065] are declared invalid for the AS4_PATH attribute. " OpenBGPd is therefore dropping the sessions when this update is received. Unideal if this attribute is learned on multiple upstreams... The impact today is fairly limited as there are relatively few bgp speakers honouring the 4-byte ASN protocol extension rules, but as code that support these features creeps around the internet, the next time this happens the impact could be much greater, so we need to understand which implementation of which BGP software caused this illegal origination. Modifying the OpenBGPd software to permit AS_CONFED_SEQUENCE, AS_CONFED_SET in an as4_path causes the path to be accepted and the session is not torn down. This isn't a great fix. From a software point of view, I agree that a configurable option to reject the route but keep the session, reject the route and drop the session, accept the route but log/send trap, etc. would be nicer, but this is an implementation thing and probably beyond the scope of this list. For now, does anyone have contacts at 196629 or 35320 who can explain the implementation and fix the behaviour ? Andy

This software appears to tear down the session when encountering at least one of these paths : Dec 10 15:31:48 l1-c1 bgpd[15300]: neighbor 84.x.x.x (S): state change Established -> Idle, reason: Fatal error 194.9.20.0 looks like it started being originated by 65000 at 12:30 UTC today or so - this was also the time I started seeing openbgp behave this this way. Renesys thinks 12:58UTC. Andy

Request for help here. We have a business partner who, like us, provides DSL services to residential and small-business customers in the US Rocky Mountain region. They just got a /20 from ARIN and were intending to renumber into it in the next week or so, but apparently it used to belong to a company in Chile. Symptoms after a morning of testing: 1) www.google.com is in Spanish 2) Web pages are slow - am assuming this is due to folks like Akamai sending them to content caches in Chile though I haven't tested it myself... God knows "web pages are slow" isn't particularly specific but I'm assuming an OC-3 with 3 DSL subscribers on it will be reasonably free of congestion and I know the upstream is competent. 3) End-user unable to complete an online e-commerce transaction due to a fraud-prevention service thinking he was a Chilean user trying to buy something with a US-based credit card. Can't be the first time this has happened. Anyone have suggestions or experience with this? I assume it'll eventually resolve - at least for 98% of sites/issues - but don't know whether "eventually" means "tomorrow" or "in a couple of years" or what they can do to accelerate the process. -Robert Tarrall.- Director of Technology E.Central/Neighborhood Link

I am fairly new user of nanog mail list so I am not sure if the question below is appropriate for this list. If not, please excuse it. - I am building a new low-budget customer WAN/LAN network and need some ideas for network management tools. I've seen couple of email threads regarding all sort of "net goodies". However, since I haven't used them all, I am not sure which OS would be the most appropriate for these aps? Can anyone share their ideas in regards of apps and supporting platforms? I would be most comfortable with free distribution of linux, but I am not sure which distro supports most of the tools? Is the paid OS required for all these tools, like RedHat Server or SuSe or Windows platforms? Thanks much, Vitto
