Netflix transit preference?

Hey NANOG! I work at a datacenter in southern Colorado that is the upstream bandwidth provider for several regional ISPs. We have been investigating our ever-growing bandwidth usage and have found that out of transits (Level3,Cogent,HE) that Netflix always seems to come in via Hurricane Electric. (We move ~1.4gbps to Netflix, and are thus not a candidate for peering. And they have no POP close.) I tested this by advertising a /24 across all providers, then selectively removed the advertisement to certain carriers to see where the bandwidth goes. In order, it appears that if there is a HE route, Netflix uses it, period. If there isn't, it prefers Level3, and Cogent comes last. Since Netflix is a big hunk of our bandwidth (and obviously makes our customers happy), we are included to buy some more HE. However, if Netflix decides that they want to randomly switch to, say, Cogent, we may be under a year-long bandwidth contract that isn't particularly valuable anymore. With all of that, I am interested in finding out of any knowledge about Netflix transit preferences, be it inside information, anecdotal, or otherwise. Greetings, (my work hat @ CERT-FI on, work email kauto.huopio(a)ficora.fi) Several Finnish media sites (www.yle.fi, www.mtv3.fi, www.hs.fi etc) have been attacked since Dec 25th. Current target is www.ampparit.com (217.149.58.35). ISP reports traffic originating from Level3 transit. Traffic is > 2 Mpps TCP SYN. I'd like to request immediate trace support - we suspect this is a very small source footprint DOS. Ok, so this might be a little off topic but I am trying to validate something a vendor is telling me and hoping some people here have expertise in this area... I am working with a SSL certificate provider. I am trying to purchase a quantity of wildcard SSL certificates to cover about 60 FQDN's across 4 domains. Vendor is telling me that the Wildcard certificates are licensed per physical device it is installed on. This means instead of using a single wildcard across 20 servers, I would have to buy 20 wildcard certs for 20 servers. This does not compute in my brain and also in my mind completely defeats the purpose of a wildcard cert as I know it. Has anyone run into this before? Thanks Blake

why haven't ethernet connectors changed?

I was looking at a Raspberry Pi board and was struck with how large the ethernet connector is in comparison to the board as a whole. It strikes me: ethernet connectors haven't changed that I'm aware in pretty much 25 years. Every other cable has changed several times in that time frame. I imaging that if anybody cared, ethernet cables could be many times smaller. Looking at wiring closets, etc, it seems like it might be a big win for density too. So why, oh why, nanog the omniscient do we still use rj45's? Mike

Fiber only in DataCenters?

Hello all, Looking for input from "providers" as well as "consumers" of data center space and facilities. Specifically speaking to the types of available physical cross connects. Are there data centers out there that are "fiber only"? That is to say that the cross connects are fiber only and no copper cross connects are available? I understand that fiber is great and all, but to my knowledge there are a lot of folks still using and needing copper cross connects. Am I wrong? -- Jim

Validation of FCS

Hi all, I'm trying to confirm (or debunk) my current understanding of FCS errors. An FCS error is a layer 2 error. In Ethernet spake, the 4 bytes of FCS data within each Ethernet frame is validated by a CRC check, which is done by the device receiving said frame. If the CRC check fails, an FCS error is reported by that receiving device. If that understanding is true and presuming a "circuit" was made up of many layer 2 devices between the A and Z side of said circuit, it would be impossible for a CRC error somewhere along the path of that circuit to register on the receiving device of either the A or Z side. Perhaps in simpler terms, a CRC error is a localized thing and would never be forwarded from one device to another. Is that fair and/or accurate? Thanks in advance.
