NANOGers - If you are going to be at NANOG 57 in Orlando, then please note that ARIN will be holding a Public Policy Consultation (PPC) there regarding several number resource policy proposals and you are very much encouraged to participate and make your views on these proposals known. Your NANOG 57 registration includes attending the ARIN Public Policy Consultation onsite if you so desire to do so. As ARIN's Public Policy Consultations are open to all, it is also possible to attend _just_ the PPC without charge, either in person or remotely. L3 East cost maint / fiber 05FEB2012 maintenance

I know a lot of you are out of the office right now, but does anybody have any info on what happened with L3 this morning? They went into a 5 hour maintenance window with expected downtime of about 30 minutes while they upgraded something like *40* of their "core routers" (their words), but also did this during some fiber work and completely cut off several of their east coast peers for the entirety of the 5 hour window. If anybody has any more info on this, on a NOC contact for them on the East Coast for future issues, you can hit me off off-list if you don't feel comfortable replying with that info here. I acknowledge sliding past the maintenance window, and we're seeing similar bumps, 09:42 - 09:46 CST is most recent. This are with our Wisconsin and Netherlands locations. They seem to be having a bad day all around. KG Hi Andrey!

We saw the same here, However our session did tear down. I was told they were doing scheduled "emergency" maintenance about 3:30PM EST Yesterday. We're hung off the orlando market. List of Comcast speeds in Chicago, IL (North side near I-94: Addisson/Irving Park/ area)

Could someone help verify the listed speeds for the different services for Comcast: Performance - 20mbps (Customer support is claiming it's now 15mbps) Blast - 30 mbps (Customer support is claiming it's now 20 mbps) I was getting 20+ download speed tests on Performance which is correct. When I told customer support I was getting half (because of packet loss) they brought this other information to my attention

Is Google Fiber a model for Municipal Networks?

I've been searching for a few days on information about Google Fiber's Kansas City deployment. While I wouldn't call Google secretive in this particular case, they haven't been very outgoing on some of the technologies. Based on the equipment they have deployed there is speculation they are doing both GPON and active thernet (point2point). I found this presentation: http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/researc… It has a very good summary of the tradeoffs we've been discussing regarding home run fibers with active ethernet compared with GPON, including costs of the eletronics compared to trenching, the space required in the CO, and many of the other issues we've touched on so far. Here's an article with some economics from several different deployments: http://fastnetnews.com/fiber-news/175-d/4835-fiber-economics-quick-and-dirty Looks like $500-$700 in capex per residence is the current gold standard. Note that the major factor is the take rate; if there are two providers doing FTTH they are both going to max at about a 50% take rate. By having one provider, a 70-80% take rate can be driven. Even with us a 4%, 10 year government bond, a muni network could finance out a $700/prem build for $7.09 per month! Add in some overhead and there's no reason a muni-network couldn't lease FTTH on a cost recovery bases to all takers for $10-$12 a month (no Internet or other services included).
