NANOG Community, The NANOG Program Committee (PC) would like to remind you that we are accepting proposals for in-person or remote presentations at all sessions of NANOG 85, a hybrid meeting, taking place in Montréal, QC, Canada on June 6th-8th, 2022. Below is a summary of key details and dates from the Call For Presentations on the NANOG website, which can be found at https://www.nanog.org/program/call-presentations/. Given by many of the industry’s top minds, presentations at NANOG meetings are meant to spark the imagination, encourage dialog, and drive new solutions to our greatest networking challenges. Presentations may cover current technologies, soon-to-be deployed technologies, and industry innovation. Vendors are welcome to submit talks which cover relevant technologies and capabilities, but presentations should not be promotional, or discuss proprietary solutions. Requested Topics: June 6th is the 10 year anniversary for World IPv6 Launch Day! As a result, for NANOG 85 we have chosen this for our theme and are actively seeking talks about IPv6. Additionally, based on feedback from our survey results, we have seen numerous requests for the following topics: - Network Automation - Tutorials (IPv6, BGP, Segment Routing, DNS) - Security (developments in, problems/solutions, various protocols of). Don’t wait! Presentation abstracts and draft slides should be submitted no later than Monday, April 25, 2022. The primary speaker, moderator, or author should submit a presentation proposal and abstract via the Program Committee Tool at: https://www.nanog.org/meetings/submit-presentation/ - Sign in with your Profile Account - Select the type of talk you propose to present, and complete the form Timeline for submission and proposal review: - Submitter enters abstract (and draft slides if possible) in the Program Committee Tool prior to the deadline for slide submission. - PC performs initial review and assigns a “shepherd” to help develop the submission — typically within 2 weeks. - Submitter develops draft slides of talk if not already submitted with the initial proposal. Please submit initial draft slides early — the PC does not evaluate submissions until draft slides are available for review. NANOG Staff is available to assist with slide templates upon request from the submitter. - Panel and Track submissions should provide a topic list and intended/confirmed participants in the abstract. - PC reviews the slides and continues to work with Submitter as needed to develop the topic. - FINAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE Draft presentation slides should be submitted prior to the published deadline for slides (April 25, 2022). - PC evaluates submissions to determine presentations for the agenda (posted on May 23, 2022). - Agenda assembled and posted. - Submitters notified. - Final presentation slides must be submitted prior to the published deadline for slides (May 20, 2022 for Remote/Pre-recordings and May 31, 2022 for in-person presentations). If you think you have an interesting topic but want feedback or suggestions for developing an idea into a presentation, please email the PC ( nanogpc(a)nanog.org) and a representative will respond to you in a timely manner. New Episode of Internet Innovators!*Crocker Reveals a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Internet History* Steve Crocker is known as the man who wrote the instructions for the Internet - in his twenties. But at one time, he was just a young graduate student trying to solve a set of problems. "We knew we didn't know all the answers - we were not going to design a complete system, we were going to design a toolkit," Crocker said of the "informal group" which included life-long friend Vint Cerf and other now-famous Internet pioneers. In fact, Crocker said when he was given the "clerical task" of writing down what they were doing, he had many a sleepless night. "I was fearful the mere act of writing down what we were thinking about might trigger a backlash," he continued. "No one had chartered us, we had no authority. I was afraid it might seem like we were being presumptuous - like we were insisting that we were in charge. *“Hackathon” Solves Real-World Tech Issue* Code Developed during NANOG Hackathon Goes Live Hackathons are an essential part of NANOG conferences. They are designed as a “fail forward” space where mistakes can be made as learning, having fun + building community is the prime objective. And sometimes this perfect cocktail of sophisticated fun leads to solving real-world technical issues. The work done at the NANOG 83 Hackathon improved the PeeringDB Simple Search and resolved a vital search issue. Thus, allowing PeeringDB (a freely available, user-maintained, database of networks, and a go-to location for interconnection data) to provide more relevant search results for the end-user. The developed code during the Hackathon, officially went live early Wednesday morning (Jan. 12). The volunteers on the Program Committee are responsible to develop and select content to program each of the three yearly NANOG conferences and other events. The Program Committee is a highly skilled, dedicated and diverse team of people who strive to improve the NANOG organization and make our industry, as a whole, better. Specific committee member responsibilities are listed here <https://www.nanog.org/about/who-we-are/program-committee/> and appointments are to 2 year terms, except when appointed to complete a retiring members term. Committee nominations will close at 9:00pm PST on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. The NANOG Board of Directors will make appointments within the week. Emails detailing the selection results will be sent to candidates shortly thereafter, and a full announcement will be sent during the following week. Volunteer participation by members on NANOG committees is part of the essential fabric of the NANOG organization. Committee members have developed new programs, brought new ideas and new methods into practice, and helped to evolve the NANOG organization. Please consider running for a NANOG committee if you are passionate about NANOG and can commit to participating! If you know someone that you believe would be interested, please nominate them.
