Actually, dollar for dollar, the linux box will outperform the cisco. What the cisco gives you is much simpler access to the knobs that make the bells ring and whistles blow. At 04:26 PM 10/28/98 -0500, you wrote:
So does linux.
Linux can be:
A packet forwarder (router) A packet filter (firewall) An IP masquerading packet filter (NAT firewall) Can run RIP, BGP, EGP, OSPF (via gated)
Maybe I'm being naiive here, but what does Cisco offer beyond this (besides the availability of higher performance)?

This isn't true. IOS does a lot more than just get packets from interface A to interface B. (In terms of managability as well as functionality) -- Shields, CrossLink.

Linux gives you access to the source... (*BSD does too...) Its also far cheaper to get spare parts for PCs than Ciscos... -Dan

It's also possible to get spare parts for PCs at 8 PM on Saturday. Not that I am a big fan of PC based or even *nix routers, one could make the argument that at <$3000 for 16 routed ports (a price someone mentioned on here) it would be very inexpensive (relatively) to keep fully configured spare chassis around for less than the price of a comparably equiped Cisco. Then again, some of us keep fully configured spare Ciscos around and still get SMARTnet Onsite 4 hour. I guess it just depends what your customers pay for. Ok, Alex; he overstated a _touch_. But have you _priced_ 168-hour support for a Cisco? You're perilously close to pulling a Shein on us. Don't do that.
