RE: Katrina could inundate New Orleans
This post is very OT, but I think events warrant the protocol violation this time. If you're in New Orleans, I'm sure the health of the local internet infrastructure becomes secondary to getting your ass above sea level...
Some of this is on topic. Internet access is as important as the lights or water being on. Right, get out, but it'll be good to see reasonable updates on what's going on utilities wise down there when the weather shifts. -M<

I'm sure other infrastructure providers are watching Katrina's track closely as it heads inland. Wind becomes less of an issue as the storm degrades, but there's still plenty of rain left in a tropical storm or a tropical depression to cause major flooding well away from the hurricane makes landfall. Pittsburgh, PA is pretty far inland, but the remnants of Ivan last year did a real number on us last September. A number of COs in low-lying areas did receive at least some flood damage, with a small handful being taken out of service completely. jms

based on a quck sql query (this is based on outdated NANPA data) here's a list of telcos/TSPs that are likely to be impacted: | ACTEL INTEGRATED COMMUNICATIONS, IN | | ADELPHIA BUSINESS LA | | AIRTOUCH PAGING - LA | | AMERICAN MET. CLC LA | | AT&T - LOCAL - LA | | BAY STAR SATELLITE | | BELLSOUTH TELECOMM INC - LA | | BELLSOUTH TELECOMM INC DBA SOUTH CE | | CELLCO PARTNERSHIP DBA VERIZON WIRE | | COLUMBIA TELECOMMUNICATIONS, INC., | | COX CABLE NEW ORLEANS, INC. | | E.SPIRE COMMUNICATIONS, INC. - BATO | | EATEL COMMUNICATIONS, INC. | | INTERMEDIA COMMUNICATIONS, INC. - L | | ITC DELTA COM - LA | | KMC TELECOM III, INC. - LA | | LEVEL 3 COMMUNICATIONS, LLC - LA | | LOUISIANA CGSA INC | | MADISON RIVER COMMUNICATIONS, LLC - | | METROCALL | | NETWORK TEL CORP LA | | NEWSOUTH COMMUNICATIONS CORP. - LA | | NEXTEL COMM | | RADIOFONE INC | | SPRINT COMMUNICATIONS COMPANY, L.P. | | SPRINT SPECTRUM, L.P. - LA | | STRATOS TELECOM, INC. - LA | | TELECORP COMM INC. | | TELIGENT, INC. - LA | | UNIVERSALCOM, INC. | | US LEC COMMUNICATIONS, INC. - LA | | VOICESTREAM WIRELESS | | WINSTAR WIRELESS, INC. - LA | | XSPEDIUS CORP | I'm sure that others will be impacted as well. These providers have at least a single NXX within New Orleans. - jared -- Jared Mauch | pgp key available via finger from jared@puck.nether.net clue++; | http://puck.nether.net/~jared/ My statements are only mine.
Folx, Renesys data is showing lots of outaged prefixes that geolocate to the affected areas, not surprisingly. Pix are at: [All pix are current as of 13h50 UCT. I'll be happy to update if there is interest.] http://www.renesys.com/images/LAout.png http://www.renesys.com/images/MSout.png http://www.renesys.com/images/ALout.png http://www.renesys.com/images/GAout.png LA is the worst hit, so far, but a few interesting things are popping up in MS and AL as well.
From a global perspective, though, things are not so dreary.
http://www.renesys.com/images/unstable.png http://www.renesys.com/images/outaged.png These show that there have been a couple of upticks in outaged networks over the past 24 hrs with one sharp spike before the hurricane hit (that was resolved quickly--not sure what that was, yet). But current outaged network count is comparable to Wed of last week, so nothing shocking there. The instability graph has a lot of noise in it, but it also fails to show outages, on a global scale, of any significance. For the interested, outaged networks that geolocate to LA right now include (edited for this audience--lots of ISPs affected, not surprisingly): La Department of Health & Hospitals LA 70821 (204.58.119.0/24) Wildnet LLC LA 70433 (208.207.88.0/24) Palmer and Associates LA 70006 (198.3.156.0/24) I55 INTERNET SERVICES LA 70401 (63.167.42.0/24) State of Louisiana Office of Telecommunications Management LA 70804-9280 (204.196.94.0/23) Southern University at New Orleans LA 70126 (198.135.204.0/24) Entergy Corporation LA 70053 (198.8.2.0/24) NCTSNOLA LA 70146 (164.229.0.0/16) Southeastern Louisiana University LA 70402 (147.174.0.0/16) La Department of Health & Hospitals LA 70821 (204.58.118.0/24) McDermott International Inc LA 70112 (131.184.180.0/24) Greater New Orleans Louisiana FreeNet LA 70130 (216.116.64.0/20) Broadband IP Inc LA 70809-1910 (66.135.7.0/24) Hibernia National Bank LA 70112 (204.63.37.0/24) CATCOMM INTERNET SERCIVES LA 70181 (204.117.135.0/24) Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium LUMCON LA 70344 (198.99.188.0/24) LOUISIANA ONLINE UNIVERSITY INFORMATION SYSTEM LOUIS LA 70803 (199.80.109.0/24) Datacom LA 70583 (12.166.206.0/24) DynMcDermott Petroleum Operations Co LA 70123 (204.63.198.0/24) I55 INTERNET SERVICES LA 70401 (206.251.163.0/24) PLANETGUIDECOM LA 70006 (65.168.97.0/24) La Department of Health & Hospitals LA 70821 (204.58.116.0/24) Loyola University LA 70118 (141.164.0.0/16) Gulf South Internet Services Inc LA 70006 (204.252.208.0/20) CenturyTel Internet Holdings Inc LA 71201 (209.142.130.0/24) Louisiana State University Medical Center LA 70112 (204.196.135.0/24) Southern University New Orleans LA 70126 (204.196.86.0/23) Louisiana State Group Benefits Program LA 70804 (204.196.93.0/24) t. -- _____________________________________________________________________ todd underwood director of operations & security renesys - interdomain intelligence todd@renesys.com www.renesys.com
