No one does either. They search for it, or pick it out of an email. But *I can read that domain name and know what it points to*. More importantly, it is possible for me to learn that k12.ca.us is picky about whom it hands it's subdomains to, and therefore I can have a reasonable guess that (DNS spoofing aside) that domain actually belongs to a school.
