Hi, Can we have less "Nanog News" on the mailing list or at least confine it to the announce mailing list? Or am I the only one that these ad blasts are starting to irritate? In my Google Apps Script that I use for header based filtering, I would just do this: ... // NANOG Newsletters var from_h = message.getHeader("From"); var reply-to_h = message.getHeader("Reply-To"); if ( (from_h.includes('nanog-announce@lists.nanog.org') && reply-to_h.includes('news@nanog.org')) { message.getThread().addLabel(GmailApp.getUserLabelByName("NANOG-Promo")); message.getThread().moveToArchive(); } ... But the news@nanog.org header only appears because it is a CC. This may not be consistent and it’s certainly not obvious or convenient to filter on. Perhaps Nanog will meet us halfway, and put right in the subject line “NANOG promotional email” or something like that. Seriously. Or just let people subscribe toe news@nanog.org if they want those things. -mel via cell

Honestly, this is the only place I see it - I have enough mailing lists and rules as it is, so I appreciate it here, but I can understand those who don't want to see it. I definitely think some kind of header flag or subject pattern to match would be a great 'meet in the middle' solution overall. -----Original Message----- From: Mel Beckman via NANOG <nanog@lists.nanog.org> Sent: Friday, November 28, 2025 4:13 PM To: nanog@lists.nanog.org Cc: nanog@lists.nanog.org; Mel Beckman <mel@beckman.org> Subject: Re: NANOG Featured on "Packet Pushers" Podcast Network! 🦃 Happy Thanksgiving! + More But the news@nanog.org header only appears because it is a CC. No. The list software has to replace the original sender's address in the From: header with the list address because DKIM/SPF/DMARC. It then places the original sender's address not in the Reply-To: header but in the Cc: header because it has to go somewhere to stay preserved, I guess. So the news@ address (not header) doesn't appear in Cc: by accident, it appears there because it's the original email's sender. -- Niels.
