Saron That's a great question They'll stay on ipv4 with a firewall or gateway that has xlate8 on it. It sees www.myipv8.com card 10.10.50.10 zs inside add 10.10.50.253 Zs outside 2203.12.34.50.2 /30 12345.12.34.56.78 as www.myipv8.com 1. Ipv4 queries zs addrbyname 2. Dbs returns a8 12345.12.34.56.78 3. Xlate8 knows it came from an ipv4 client 4. Xlate pushes the rule into mftables ipv4 to ipv8 src ---------- dst xlate ---src - dest 10.10.50.10 -- 10.10.50.254 xlate 2203.12.34.50.2 -- 12345.12.34.56.78 No encapsulation needed. If it crosses a boundary that exits ipv4 then that ipv8 router does an 8over4 and forwards it. Ipv8 is ipv4 v2 You never have to upgrade an IPv4 client to operate in an IPv8 environment Jamie Ipv8 is ipv4 v2. On Sat., May 2, 2026, 7:31 p.m. , <sronan@ronan-online.com> wrote:
And how will you update the myriad of operating systems and embedded devices which haven’t received updates in years but are still running inside enterprises?

Marco,
Here's how I see it going.
1. The OS upgrade is transparent. 2. The firewalls at the edge upgrade and IPv8 zone features. 3. The 10.x can now be split and operated by area. 4. People turn that on, and Zone Server to interoperate better inside regardless of the Internet status. 5. Internally it becomes part of the OS. 6. Even just implementing a Zone Server, and let people manage 10.x by area will be a great option.

Your proposal isn't too, as there is nothing that can be backwards compatible regarding IPv4-only nodes in an IPv4-only environment with admins who do not want any change.
