Uh, first off all. Its not a service that needs constant babysitting. You set up it once and forget, probably forever. Second, its not 80s or 90s, compute is cheap.. very cheap. Are you saying that running such proxy is such a problem? I doubt it... ---------- Original message ---------- From: Tom Beecher <beecher@beecher.cc> To: North American Network Operators Group <nanog@lists.nanog.org> Cc: borg@uu3.net Subject: Re: Whois using these ARIN services?? Actually, I think RIRs could actually run proxy themselfs, and generate WHOIS reply based on RDAP data. Why not?

It occurs to me that if people REALLY REALLY want WHOIS, it would not be terribly hard to write a proxy that puts a WHOIS front end on RDAP servers.
Or even simpler:
$ brew install rdap $ echo alias whois rdap >> ~/.bashrc $ . ~/.bashrc
As a benefit of this, you'll even get parsable yaml (or json / xml if you want that instead), instead of the unstructured mess you get with whois.
