2U chassis (was Linux Router Kit)
We are trying to roll our own server/router/accounting box and have everything speced out but the chassis, we need to find a PC rack mount chassis that is no higher than 2U ( 3.5"). The co-los we use charge us not only by bandwidth but by real estate, we need to cram as many boxes as we can in the space. In fact if you know of a 1U (like the cobalt boxes) that would be even better. Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Geoff White GW Communications Inc.

Whoa, that would be awfully tight. If I were you, I would simply pay for extra rack space, and get an Appro (www.appro.com) NITEO or 42xx...

If I use a mother board that has Ultra2 scsi and 10/100 all on board I don't need anything else, theese are servers, I don't need sound cards, framebuffers, or anything else, just space for two 4 Gig disks The units that mention 5 slot passive backplanes... can I still put an ATX formfactor motherboard in the bottom?

The Nightshade motherboard from Intel fits this, with 10/100, scsi, 2 meg video built in. I know I saw some L-shaped PCI / ISA cards over near one of these chasis just the other day near a salesmans desk. This would allow for another pci networking card. However, I don't know whether or not we are selling them right yet. That question/answer belongs to sales@varesearch.com. rob

Try looking at the Crystal Computer CS500 series of machines. If memeory serves, these are around 2-3U high, but are narrow so that four of them on their shelf will fit in the space of one normal rack chassis. HP's rolled out a nice pair of 2U racked units. One's an HP9000 designed for ISPs, but the other one's a Netserver. I saw the Netserver at this fall Internet World, and it looked pretty good. http://www.hp.com/netserver/index.htm If you look at the picture in the middle, the second rack from the left shows 20 dual PII's in a single 2.0 meter rack. If you're looking for one of their unix servers, the new A class is also 3.5" high, but packs the power of a D330 into it. Check them out...really well done. -- mat.

This may not help for a single server, but if you're need multiple boxes, what about using Crystal PCs. They're 4-5 U, but you can fit two or four of them on the same mounting shelf depending on the model.

In addition to their compact size, they also have alarm pannels for fans, etc and an output to be hooked to an alarm system. They also have an option for -48v power. The hight allows the use of standard size cards. See: http://www.crystalpc.com/ It is common to see a Crystal ad in telecommunications magazines.
