Ok folks, I posted a few days ago a request for information on the gated system and got quite a few helpful suggestions. Unfortunately more than half of those helpful suggestions suggested that I go elsewhere since I was "off-topic". I was under the impression (I've been on this list for several years) that anything related to network operations (such as finding gated) might be somewhat topical compared to a bunch of other drivel here. My question then is this... What is topical for this list anymore? Since everyone agrees that no one is talking about any sort of content, what content can we agree should be talked about here? I don't recall any postings of FAQs that describe what is and is not a normal operational conversation at all... --- To keep "on topic" a bit, does anyone know who is putting in decient sized pipes from North America (is that on topic?) over to the dGix in Stockholm? Or are most providers skipping over to Telehouse then over to either the dGix and/or Seednet in Amsterdam? Also, anyone know of someone who is willing to co-locate equipment in any of these locations? On another question, has anyone used the Cisco remote director? If so, does anyone have remote protocol servers that they are willing to feed out local route information from? The only allowed topic seems to be to flame people who have allegedly posted off topic material, it tends to be from hardheads who have their head so far up their arses that they don't want to have to thumb through what they find as inapropriate, just because they don't use that brand or type. If discussing router types and routeing engines are not topics for nanog, then as far as I can see there is no point on having an operators list. Regards, Neil. -- Neil J. McRae. Alive and Kicking. Preface: this is only my personal opinion. Someone else may differ with me or may be able to express more clearly what I am trying to express. This list is for discussion of Internet network operations in North America. Generally, if it doesn't relate to routers and to the connections between routers then it probably is not network operations. Operational issues are always fairly immediate with perhaps a window of about 6 months into the future. Anything beyond that is philosophy, wishful thinking or IETF standard setting material. If your company operates a network then it is likely that some things that you do are operational (network operations center activities) and therefore are appropriate to discuss here and some things are not operational (modems, customer routers, etc). The people on this list generally would define the Internet as the mesh of BGP speaking routers, therefore discussions about anything outside that mesh may be off topic. This is why you will see sarcastic questions like, "How do I configure my router to deal with that?" when the topic strays. If I've missed something important or made a glaring error, please correct me publicly on the list, otherwise let's discuss it off list.
To keep "on topic" a bit, does anyone know who is putting in decient sized pipes from North America (is that on topic?) over to the dGix in Stockholm?
Wouldn't you just ask the dGix operators to find out this? And don't you think this kind of question would find a better answer on RIPE's European operators list? ******************************************************** Michael Dillon voice: +1-650-482-2840 Senior Systems Architect fax: +1-650-482-2844 PRIORI NETWORKS, INC. http://www.priori.net "The People You Know. Why would a question about connections between Europe and North America necessarily be better asked on a European mailing list than a North American one? -- Andrew Crawford "Sweet the laverock's note and long, Liltin wildly Network Engineeer up the glen. Perhaps the Europeans are more "on-topic" than the North Americans? Actually, I think that I'd class this one as a NANOG issue and the specific exchange mailing list issues. -- --bill

It wouldn't. But your questions were specifically about connections into dGix and Telehouse London and I rather expect that European operators will be more familiar with what is happening at those two exchange points. In addition, the Europeans could comment intelligently on other exchange points to touch down at that you may not have considered. Now if you had asked us where to touch down in North America with a new connection then I'm sure we would all have some interesting opinions. ******************************************************** Michael Dillon voice: +1-650-482-2840 Senior Systems Architect fax: +1-650-482-2844 PRIORI NETWORKS, INC. http://www.priori.net "The People You Know. What list is that then Michael? Neil. -- Neil J. McRae. Alive and Kicking. Domino: In the glow of the night. neil@DOMINO.ORG NetBSD/sparc: 100% SpF (Solaris protection Factor) Free the daemon in your computer!
