Do the large carriers now participate in 'one-call' operations like power and gas companies do? At least in Virginia a couple of years ago, they didn't. It might be a good idea for them to do so.

Wow. They must not have any fiber near our facility. The folks running the digging operations are keeping Plastikote in business selling orange paint. There seems to be more orange than black on the blacktop -- all of it marked pretty clearly with the carrier name. Is this "very large telco" experiencing more than their fair share of cut related outages as result of their competition paranoia? More interestingly, if they refuse to disclose the location of their fiber, does this offer any relief from damages that may be incurred by the poor schmoe who puts a large steal bucket right through 192 strands of their fiber because there wasn't a nice orange line on the ground where he shouldn't dig? --- John Fraizer EnterZone, Inc

Same here. When work is done at 9th and Rockwell, behind my building, you will often see lots of markings in the middle of the road - generally, it'll be either AT&T, MFS or Ameritech's cabling being marked at that particular intersection. -- North Shore Technologies, Cleveland, OH http://NorthShoreTechnologies.net Steve Sobol, BOFH - President, Chief Website Architect and Janitor Linux Instructor, PC/LAN Program, Natl. At our location, it's Ameritech, Ameritel, Williams, Winstar, ICG, DIGEX/Intermedia, Prism, Time Warner, C&W, Worldcom, Nextlink and of course EnterZone and CMH-IX. We live in telco heaven though. I can throw a rock and hit all of the above from the roof of our NOC. With all the construction going on around here (additional fiber rings being built) I'm suprised they don't just bolt the steal plates to the road to save time. <grin> --- John Fraizer EnterZone, Inc

Yeah. I don't. :) A bunch of telcos' facilities are down in the Valley, with the notable exception of Nextlink, whose Cleveland CO is on the second floor of my building. -- North Shore Technologies, Cleveland, OH http://NorthShoreTechnologies.net Steve Sobol, BOFH - President, Chief Website Architect and Janitor Linux Instructor, PC/LAN Program, Natl. So, do you get loops via nextlink? It has been nice living where we do. We just run our own fiber to everyone and then refuse to pay loops. <grin> --- John Fraizer EnterZone, Inc -- Support your government, give Echelon / Carnivore something to parse -- classfield top-secret government restricted data information project CIA KGB GRU DISA DoD defense systems military systems spy steal terrorist Allah Natasha Gregori destroy destruct attack democracy will send Russia bank system compromise international own rule the world ATSC RTEM warmod ATMD force power enforce sensitive directorate TSP NSTD ORD DD2-N AMTAS STRAP warrior-T presidental elections policital foreign embassy takeover --------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I needed them, I'm sure I could. I haven't gotten into connectivity beyond dialup and ISDN/DSL because there hasn't been a lot of call for it yet -- I primarily do web hosting and contract programming. I have had exactly one client looking for a T. As it is, being "On-Net," it's nice to have my orders for new service filled in 1-2 business days :) (This applies to POTS and probably would apply to ISDN if I ordered it from them. For obvious reasons, I don't expect them to be turning up hi-cap circuits within 1-2 days.) -- North Shore Technologies, Cleveland, OH http://NorthShoreTechnologies.net Steve Sobol, BOFH - President, Chief Website Architect and Janitor Linux Instructor, PC/LAN Program, Natl.
