Just bloody great. You and Paul are about to leave because of Jim, Karl, et al. What ever public worthwhile technical list you join Jim, Karl, etc. will follow. You and Paul (and no doubt several others that silently unsubscribed) are valuable contributors to this list. It is a crying shame to think that you are going to let your voices be silenced by the DNS discussion fungus. If the NANOG list needs to be moderated to keep you and others then so be it. I volunteer to moderate if nobody else is willing. I will use a simple rule. I will filter any message that mentions DNS politics. I will filter any message whose sole content is an ad hominem attack. I think that should cover about 95% of the traffic of late. I will repeat again... remove nanog from your cc string when discussing DNS issues. Metzger, Crocker et al... Take a hike! I did.

Sounds good to me! While I might be included in many of your minds as the above "et al" <grin> and thereby not eligible to vote, I'll vote for Mike as Moderator, as he is the first person here to stop whining about the problem and propose to fix it. Take care, Ron
Merit isn't going to moderate, or allow anyone else to moderate, this list. However, if someone makes a "mod.nanog" mailing list and feeds it by reading the regular NANOG list and forwarding (with original headers) all articles which are not written by (or which follow up to) Fleming and Denninger, then I for one would switch my subscription to the "mod.nanog" list. You would of course have to forward "mod.nanog" articles back to the real NANOG list so that those who want to see *everything* can do so. Yes, "." is allowed in a mailing list name. Long live mod.all.

Ack. I second this. This is starting to look like cypherpunks: a large number of kooks, lots of politics and back-stabbing, and little information. No need to vote for a moderator, that will just create more traffic. If you think you have what it takes, set the list up and announce it. The signal to noise ratio on this list has been abominable for a long time and I'm tired of deleting all the useless drivel. I'm jumping ship with the rest. Goodbye.... --joe Mike Leber wrote:

I guess I can ask again ... I think a digest format would really help. I receommend a moderated list. However, being the capitalist that I am, I would be willing to pay for my subscription and those of our employees. It is my belief that this would help solve three problems. Since I value the content and utility of this list if it were focused on its intended purpose, I I receommend a moderated list. Since I value the content and utility of this list if it were focused on its intended purpose, I might be willing to pay quite a lot. If the price were set properly, it would help seperate out the group that places value on belonging to this list and those that don't. Secondly, the proceeds could be used to pay a moderator. I think this is important, since it does take time to perform the function and it is unfair to expect someone with a brain to do it for free. This presumably would result in better quality as well. Finally, any excess proceeds could be used to defray the cost of hosting NANOG meetings. I know that the NANOG organizers are already quite busy. I would volunteer to initiate this program under the auspices of NANOG. Kind regards, John Russo GeoNet

John, I would propose that folks use mail filters such as procmail. Its much cheeper and there is no overhead. If this list was moderated, and merrit has said that it would not be, how could we trust our moderator? If geo.net moderated the list I bet we would never see a bad word about you guys ;-) Lost of folks believe in open discussions. Just be conservative in what you send and liberal in what you recieve. -Rick On Mon, 2 Jun 1997, John A. Russo - GeoNet Communications wrote:
