There's an obvious problem. How could they locate both ends, lift same, splice, and seal the cable in 24 hours? -- A host is a host from coast to coast.................wb8foz@nrk.com & no one will talk to a host that's close........[v].(301) 56-LINUX Unless the host (that isn't close).........................pob 1433 is busy, hung or dead....................................20915-1433

I don't think they did. I think they just were able to move the data onto other routes in 24 hours. If they did splice the cable in 24 hours, I would like to see the video of that one. :-) -- Check out the new CLEC mailing list at http://www.robotics.net/clec

Any normal (*) person buying transatlantic capacity on a non-SDH cable tends to buy protection bandwidth either in the form of preemption or preemptible bandwidth. (*) = some people obviously elect to take the risk not to do this. Interesting whether they had any SLA's or not. Interesting also to know whether the customers concerned knew this was the situation, if indeed it is as alleged. Some people (one of whom may post back here) use IP as the protection mechanism rather than SDH, which has some reasonably obvious pros and cons (double capacity when everything is working, IGP activity required to switch over, etc.). -- Alex Bligh GX Networks (formerly Xara Networks)

Nahhh....the squid documentation hasn't kept up with its new capabilities: "We're not just a web cache any more." Splicing goes faster with ten tentacles.

Having listened to NPR report on a Manta Ray large enough to tow a USCG 41' cutter backwards; I'm not sure I want to ...arm.. any sea creatures with high-tech tools such as lasers and fusion splicers... they sound dangerous enough as it is, thank you. -- A host is a host from coast to coast.................wb8foz@nrk.com & no one will talk to a host that's close........[v].(301) 56-LINUX Unless the host (that isn't close).........................pob 1433 is busy, hung or dead....................................20915-1433
