The NAP providers (Ameritech, Sprint, and PacBell) do get some government money. As with all government funding, there is red tape, such as providing services to R&E type stuff.
Ameritech doesn't receive any government funding for the Chicago NAP. I believe that Bellcore receives some government funding. I don't think that Sprint or PacBell get any government $$ either, but they should confirm or deny that themselves. --John
That is correct..... Pac bell and Ameritech bid zero cost because they get income from the NAPs by charging people to attach. bellcore gets a small piece of change for providing research coordination with the two rbocs. ******************************************************************** Gordon Cook, Editor & Publisher Subscript.: Individ-ascii $85 The COOK Report on Internet Non Profit. $150 431 Greenway Ave, Ewing, NJ 08618 Small Corp & Gov't $200 (609) 882-2572 Corporate $350 Internet: cook@cookreport.com Corporate. How is MFS and Ameritech making money at the NAP's then? $2,000 to connect to MAE-East including telco is vary good. How do they make money at that? -Nathan
I didn't say they are making a profit. I don't KNOW if they are making a profit. They do charge money to attach as does MFS. ******************************************************************** Gordon Cook, Editor & Publisher Subscript.: Individ-ascii $85 The COOK Report on Internet Non Profit. $150 431 Greenway Ave, Ewing, NJ 08618 Small Corp & Gov't $200 (609) 882-2572 Corporate $350 Internet: cook@cookreport.com Corporate. Based upon my understanding of MFS & the LEC's cost bases, they ARE making money at that rate. It would be interesting to here if MFS & the LEC disagree. On Sat, 7 Oct 1995, Nathan Stratton <nathan@netrail.net> wrote:
