That's what we are talking about, I think. There is value in a name; for example, Neustar (nic.us) has reserved whitehouse.us (see whois below). I would not have been too worried about some jerk trying to pretend that he's the President of the United States because his email address is president@whitehouse.us (besides, whitehouse.com has provided us with enough Bill Clinton jokes). Most people know better. What is to be concerned about is some troll doing something like http://www.wiana.org/ (they hijacked 1.0.0.0/8) with nanog.us. Maybe we know better, but not everyone. This one is my fault. I put in-addr.arpa on the protected list, and didn't think about operational non-dns infrastructure. I can't tell you who to talk to over at NS, but since you all have latest bind, and are cluefull on the VGRS wildcard hack, you all can limit the effect that the "nanog" has in the .us root zone. Uh... This appears to be a potential trademark law issue, except that I'm not aware of Merit or anybody else ever claiming NANOG as a trademark. Presumably, if this becomes a problem (somebody advertising alternate "NANOG" conferences, for example), Merit's lawyers can deal with it. This certainly isn't an operational issue, unless the word NANOG, independent of context, is somehow of critical operational importance. I suppose this is the slippery slope that's opened up when people start blocking wildcards they don't like in their individual DNS servers, but as one of those who was concerned about the effect on DNS consistency that would have, I shudder to think what would happen if individual DNS operators started doing trademark enforcement. -Steve

Well, at least one other netops conference is in the same boat - APRICOT2005.NET is registered to a domain squatter. Well, I understand that this _appears_ to be a marks issue. However, the operator (NS) is allowed under the regulatory agreement (quasi-ICANN gTLD contract) to create a reserved words list, as is the regulator, independent of any other theory of right. in-addr.arpa sure isn't copyrighted. When I negociated NS's deal with CNNIC, it was not novel that they (CNNIC) wanted the names of some (highly respected) individual persons similarly not offered unconditionally to unqualified buyers. We'd the same language in the .BIZ (ICANN) agreement, and in the .US (US DoC) Recap: nanog didn't have to be trademarked to have been one of the "reserved words" for a registry operated for a large part of north america, and it is at the registry operator's discression to retroactively withdraw words, subject to the overview of its regulator, in this case, the US DoC. On the other hand, if disfunction can only be cured by copy right, things are going to be entertaining. Eric no longer speaking, for, or to, NS, the DoC, ICANN, or god.
