Is there a cheap way of getting 2-4 gige wavelengths? (2 would do) We have some dark fiber from A to B. It would be handy to run 2-4 seperate gige connections over it without spending squids on Metro DWDM kit. -- Marc
Semantically I think that would be coarse wave division... ;) canary makes an inexpensive (well relativly anyway). 2 port multimode to single mode gig multiplexer... http://www.canarycom.com/products/wdmulti/p2.htm On Wed, 26 Sep 2001, Marc Williams wrote:

for purely ethernet applications, you may want to look at Extreme Networks. Their switches have 4G and 8G WDM options. http://www.extremenetworks.com --- Terence C. Don't you have homework to do? I remember you were trying to get us to read your english paper the other day. Or why don't you tell us about those supposed Layer 4 NAPs you had planned?

Grow up. Rachel -- Schadenfreude is seriously underrated.
I must admit that I don't know the history of Nick Catalano, and currently I think that is to my benefit. BUT, I do think that Nick should be treated with the same respect that is due all NANOG members. A higher level of professionalism, all the way around, would tend to eliminate issues such as this. Surely you must have reached a low spot if I am the one preaching professionalism to you. ;) -Jim P. --- Rachel Warren <rachel@plur.net> wrote:

Or you could by a couple of 10gig switches and build 1G trunks... Neil.

I know some very cheap passive equipment that'll let you share 1310nm and 1550nm light on the same fiber. They're in the few $100:s of dollars each. If you need less than 10km then they're very nice. We used them to share 1550nm GigE and 1310 FDDI on a 18km long fiber stretch. Then of course CWDM as everybody else mentioned, colored GBICs in the 1510, 1530, 1550, 1570 etc nm wavelengths that you let share the same fiber. They go up to 40km without expensive gear. -- Mikael Abrahamsson email: swmike@swm.pp.se
