The service interruption was apparently a result of a major regional power failure in Northern Virginia. I'm curious whether it was AOL or their providers who suffered from the power failure. I would expect AOL would have back-up power.

Was anyone else effected in Northern Virginia? Other than a couple of stories about AOL IM being down, I couldn't find any news coverage of a major regional power outage in Northern Viriginia. The only story I found was an electrical fire at Dullas Town Center near the Gap store. VEPCO customer service didn't know of any power outages.

Hmm, my sites were up, I heard that it was a Netra ft1800 failure. That server was used to store a lot of IP buddy lists and other parts of the application.

There wasn't a power outage reported in The Washington Post, as near as I can tell. None of my facilities in the Northern VA area has lost mains from Dominion Power recently. I don't have any evidence that a major or general power problem ever happened. Ran

From what I've heard it was a crane striking a major power line at around 2pm EST.

My house in Reston showed initial power loss at 12:06pm, fully restored by 13:45. The construction of the Fairfax County Parkway segment by the Reston Town Center is probably the culprit. In recent days I have seen work done to the main distribution lines that go through/across that segment. KL Ronan Mullally wrote:
