Older than that, and btw, Karl Kleinpaste did just that, when the initial Compuserve<-->'Net email link killed OSU's mail due to "ftp by mail" [ab]use. Karl wrote 9-track tapes and carried them across town to relieve the backed-up Telebit Trailblazer link..... -- A host is a host from coast to coast.................wb8foz@nrk.com & no one will talk to a host that's close........[v].(301) 56-LINUX Unless the host (that isn't close).........................pob 1433 is busy, hung or dead....................................20915-1433

I tried to track that one down many years ago. The first attribution I knew of was Henry Spencer. I asked him about it, and he disclaimed authorship, said he didn't know where it may have originated, but that I should consider checking the very early working papers of the arpanet, c. 1970-ish. -Bennett
