Howdy all. We are about to install a new VXR, however it came to our attention that FDDI is not compatable with it at all. Unfortunately, we need to connect FDDI to this router. Has anyone seen a cheap switch or converter that has both FDDI and Fast Ethernet on it? I know I can do a 4700, but thats large, expensive and clunky...Any ideas? Reid Fishler Lightning.net
Can anyone refer me to an RFC or similar documentation that outlines how an RFC should be written? I've heard rumors that there is something out there called "RFC Writer" that helps RFC authors keep consistent structure. If this thing exists, can someone tell me where to get it? =================================================================== Peter Rohrman main: 212.809.3522 ext 1321 Install Engineer direct: 212.981.1555 InterNAP Network Services fax: 212.635.5477 Suite 401 65 Broadway New York, NY 10006 ===================================================================

i dunno about that, but there are rfcs on it. rfc2223.txt rfc2360.txt for historical interest only rfc0825.txt rfc1111.txt rfc1543.txt and maybe even (if you like xml) rfc2629.txt -- |-----< "CODE WARRIOR" >-----| codewarrior@daemon.org * "ah! i see you have the internet twofsonet@graffiti.com (Andrew Brown) that goes *ping*!" andrew@crossbar.com * "information is power -- share the wealth."

Yeah, that's a real disappointment with the VXR. The best you'll be able to do with Cisco is the Catalyst 2820, which lists for about $8,600. Coincidentally, I've got one on order now - in lieu of buying a pricier (and somewhat wasteful of a chassis) Cat4k or Cat5k, I opted for using the backplane on the switch to interconnect FE and FDDI uplink boards. The basic part numbers you'll need are: WS-C2828-EN, WS-X2818, and WS-X2842, along with any maintenance you might wish to purchase along with it. Some product info is available on http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/pcat/ca2820.htm Jimmy
You could always put together a router with a DEC PCI FDDI card and Intel Fast ethernet to convert cheaply between the too... With a Celeron 500 or something, the cost is well under $1000.. I see you're getting responses so I won't go into equipment. Be aware though that the MTU of FE is 1500 bytes, and the MTU of FDDI is 4470 (defaults of course). You can be hurt by this difference. GigE does not have that issue, if that's an option.
