It's been announced today that the sale of Exodus to C&W has been completed, after approval by the courts and regulatory agencies. Executive summary is that Exodus will run as a separate business unit, with all C&W and Digital Island hosting coming under the Exodus name with the C&W "globe" logo. Full details at: http://www.exodus.net/about_exodus/press_room/press_releases/20020201_01.htm... The only question that remains in my mind, as an Exodus customer, is "will they merge the IP networks?" And I sure hope the answer is no :) Tim -- Tim Wilde twilde@dyndns.org Systems Administrator Dynamic DNS Network Services http://www.dyndns.org/

I'd think that one of the reasons that they merged was to experience an economy of scale; I'd bet they will be merged. Perhaps not immediately, but soon enough. -- Alex Rubenstein, AR97, K2AHR, alex@nac.net, latency, Al Reuben -- -- Net Access Corporation, 800-NET-ME-36, http://www.nac.net --

They've already significantly reduced their peering in Australia, in two phases - first they closed down AUSIX (since they were closing down one of their IDCs which had it in there), then they stopped peering their US content with their Australian peers (and I'd expect they also stopped peering their Australian content with their US peers). It was all so good while it lasted... I'm still wondering about the other IDCs. 26 of 44 have been sold, and the brand name with them it would appear. Some of the others (at least the remaining 2 of the original 3 Australian ones - one of the Australian ones was shut down a while ago) are still operating under the Exodus name and aren't mentioned anywhere in the sale agreement. One of the two remaining Australian ones used to be very profitable before Exodus bought it, and I believe it remained profitable after they bought it. Although it has lost it's largest customer (and possibly the most prominent content provider in Australia) since the chapter 11. Reading more from http://www.exodus.net/special/, 14 of their IDCs (4 international, 10 domestic) have been closed. That still leaves 4 with their future in doubt (although it doesn't list the third Australian IDC as closed - so perhaps only 3 in doubt, the two remaining Australian ones and one other, somewhere?) Something about which I also wondered. But how would that fit in with the "must be run as a separate business unit" provision? Sort of like Digex and WCom... But that presumably doesnt exclude exodus adopting policies that happen to be the same as C&W such as depeering, they've done it fairly quickly with other acquisitions.. Wonder if C&W chiefs are aware that to class yourself as an Internet provider you have to be connected to the rest of it!? Steve

More than well aware, I'm sure. As an added bonus, given their experience in the telco/facilities arena, I believe C&W realizes the importance of maintaining uninterruptible power and HVAC. 8-) -a
