I can think of one good reason: Not everyone you might want to peer with on the West Coast is at the PAIX. Curt-
Well, due to the lack of traffic, here's a question that I've been pondering...are there any good reasons (besides MCI's peering requirements) to go into the Pac Bell NAP as well as MAE-West and the PAIX?
(This question probably won't have any impact on any decisions; I'm just curious as to people's thoughts on the matter, and it's nice to be able to post something here that isn't about net abuse.)

Right, the PAIX by itself wouldn't be enough (though the lighting is really cool); but with the PAIX /and/ MAE-West? *********************************************************************** J.D. Yes, the lighting and tile is very nice. It also would be hard for a airplane to crash into it. The problem is that MAE-West has a lot of problems. It is worth the extra $$ to have that connection when MAE-West dies. Curt-
While that is certainly true of PAIX, it is also true of MAE-West and PacBell. Not everyone is everywhere. On top of that, the "quality" of peering with a given peer may vary from exchange point to exchange point, depending on how that peer is built out to each of the exchange points in question - a factor that is difficult for the exchange point operator to control (or perhaps even know). Anyone considering an exchange point should do so in a well-informed fashion. Bill Manning conducted an "Exchange Point Engineering" BOF at the S.F. NANOG, the notes for which are at: http://www.academ.com/nanog/feb1997/exchange-point.html A lot of what it takes to be well-informed can be derived from that. Stephen
