"Struggling WorldCom Inc., one of the major backbone providers of networksthat route traffic over the Internet, suffered a major commercial Internet outage beginning at 8 a.m. EDT on Thursday, according to a company thatmonitors Internet performance."
Article goes on to state the reason was a "software glitch".

Outages like that are more likely to to be caused by a "who" rather than a "what". ;) -Jim P.

It's more informative than http://www.noc.uu.net/: "Backbone: WorldCom is currently experiencing an interruption of service in various hubs in the U.S. We are working to restore service as quickly as possible." It has said that all day.
what *caused* the outage?
I suggest that WorldCom/UUnet customers should ask WorldCom/UUnet for more details. And those of us affected indirectly would like to know if there's an expected time-to-repair. Kevin
