Jay: Actually, this isn't a WHOIS related problem.. (although WHOIS 'could' be down as of late.. ) TPC.INT is an internal alias at Cambridge University. TPC.INT is not a FQDN.. Best. -----

TPC.INT is not a FQDN.. It was real when I was playing with internet fax many moons ago. It was a system that Marshall Rose (among others) setup to route faxes across the internet to a "close" gateway that would spit it out into the telephone system at minimal cost. TPC.INT in this case stood for "The Phone Company" and was Marshall's "little" joke since it was using the Internet to deprive them of income (assuming they worked that out :-) "Hosts" inside that domain were associated with the reverse international phone number of the area you were serving and the system used a longest suffix match to get to the closest gateway. Mark.

As we host www.tpc.int I feel I should bring to your attention an error in at least one of the above statements. Regards, Andrew -- Andrew Bangs, Demon Internet Ltd andrewb@demon.net http://www.demon.net/ http://www.demon.nl/

Indeed, all three statements are incorrect. It is not an alias, Darren is still hosted by Oxford, and TPC.INT is clearly an FQDN. This is supposed to be an operators' forum, not a betting parlor. The int TLD is not handled by the InterNIC, it's handled by USC-ISI, as revealed by a query of InterNIC's servers. But you can't do a whois of tpc.int using nii.isi.edu, the whois server that you use to do whois queries on .US subdomains. Perhaps you should ask ISI why they don't provide whois info, or perhaps you can ask who does?? -- New Age Consulting Service, Inc. 815 Superior Ave #425, Cleveland OH 44114 **FLAT RATE** ISDN Dialups Available In Cleveland and Akron; soon in Ravenna Surf using 128K ISDN for $37.50 a month! Well a rwhois(client) call to nii.isi.edu done thusly, rwhois -h nii.isi.edu:43 fp.k12.wa.us Returns : Referral Whois (RWhois) spec version 1.0 (InterNIC V-1.0BETA4) Connecting to [nii.isi.edu] port [43] -> command line server RWhois Server at nii-server.isi.edu version V-1.0: Connecting to [rwhois.internic.net] port [4321] Punt referral to higher authority ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Connecting to [rwhois] port [0] Punt referral to higher authority <ERROR> Can't find host 'rwhois'. Punt to higher authority , Hunh.... ! It seems they don't supply whois info for areas below the us. ? Os is it more on the line that they delegate to 'someone' but then don't supply who someone is thru whois ?
Indeed?
