INTERNIC charging for address space?
Has anyone heard if the INTERNIC was going to charge for address space. If so, how much and when would it be starting? Michael Gibson Senior Network Administrator - NETCOM Canada tel 416-341-5754 fax. 416-341-5725 magibson@netcom.ca
I seriously doubt that the Internic has such plans. Although its contract may be extended for a period of time, current plans have the award terminate in 2nd quarter 1998. Charging for address space is tantamount to selling integers. There is a fairly large body of discussion on this topic at piara@apnic.net In the near term, I expect ARIN to have a greater role with the North American ISP use of IP space. You should check out their web site for more details. (This is one reason I -HATE- the web!)

http://www.arin.net Has been in the works for well over a year. And they won't be charging for address space per se, see the website for details. As others have mentioned, you should refer to www.arin.net for specifics on North American allocation changes. By this time, organizations expecting to request blocks of address space in the near future should be in the process of joining ARIN and subscribing to the appropriate level of registration services. /John

Yes, I've heard, and the answers are: The Internic will not be charging for address space. The Internic will no longer be dealing with IP address space at all in the very near future as ARIN takes over those duties. ARIN will not be charging for IP address space. ARIN will be charging various membership fees and fees for service. Read the details at http://www.arin.net If you still don't understand that ARIN is not selling IP addresses then read the *ENTIRE* archives of the NAIPR mailing list also at the above website. If you are in Phoenix later this month then you will get a progress report on ARIN amongst other edifying educational activities. ******************************************************** Michael Dillon voice: +1-650-482-2840 Senior Systems Architect fax: +1-650-482-2844 PRIORI NETWORKS, INC. http://www.priori.net "The People You Know.
