Horrible world trade center crash, traffic effect

Just to add a few points: All VHF TV stations except for CBS 2 are off the air, many radio stations are off the air, and it's largely impossible to get a call in. All bridges and tunnels are closed (which I assume includes the PATH). A horrible thing to wake up to... could see the smoke out my bedroom window... C

Listening to America Radio (out of DC - only thing we could get), and a man just called in saying that a plane just landed about 20 ft. from the Pentagon. Be careful if you are in a federal building today. Jake Baillie Personal Capacity On Tue, 11 Sep 2001, Charles Sprickman wrote:

I live about 4 miles from the Pentagon, and heard a distant explosion Local TV is showing an apparently intact building, although there is smoke on the far side, in the direction of National Airport. There are conflicting reports if a helicopter or an airliner, or both, hit near the Pentagon, but the building itself does not seem to have taken massive damage. Obviously, there are lots of sounds of emergency vehicles. I started hearing high-speed passes of what sounded like jet fighters starting about an hour ago. There was another sound at about 10:20, which shook my windows. It was about the magnitude of a very large fireworks burst down on the Mall. Can't say if it was a secondary explosion, a sonic boom, or what. Howard

Report that a plan crashed into the helicopter landing pad, which would account for the conflicting reports. The majority of the Pentagon is underground, and fairly hardened (from what I have been told) -- /ak

I can absolutely deny that. What caused this rumor was two sonic booms caused by jet fighter aircraft that were scrambling to escort Air Force 1. (It passed directly over my house with the escorts) There was ALSO a grass fire behind the VA hospital. When people who are unfamiliar with sonic booms and air crashes hear the booms, see the smoke from the grass fire, they assume that it's a crash. We heard the rumor as well. I confirmed with an onsite observer at the VA Hospital with the Central Ohio Amateur Radio Emergency Service. No plane crash in Dayton, OH. It was a grass fire. Moments before the fire, there was a couple of loud booms. This was caused by a couple of jet fighters from WPAFB. Speculation is, they were clearing the air space for Airforce-1, as it's flight path most likely would have brought them through here, on it's way back to D.C. Just curious, but are people going looney at the gas stations in your neck of the woods too? [Copied from a post on another list] Danny Lewin, co-founder of Akamai technologies, was in one of the planes: <http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/010911/112407_1.html> Danny was a buddy of mine, and many, many people at Akamai. We will all dearly miss him. He was not just an executive at a big company. He honestly did drive our corporation and give us all a boost, emotionally, professionally. His loss will be felt profoundly, on a very personal level. Of course, many people from all over the world will be feeling this type of loss today. I do not mean to trivialize their loss, just want to honor Danny's memory. Sorry for the off-topic post.

Actually, local news here in Washington, DC (WJLA Ch7 and WRC Ch4) is showing video footage of the damage to the Pentagon on the side next to the heliport pad. It is possible that there was confusion b/c the damage occured on the side of the Pentagon that is next to the helicopter landing pad. However, an eyewitness on the news reported that he saw the American Airlines plane crash into the side of the building. The damage is quite extensive since it appears the plane was able to punch through from the outer ring all the way to the center court yard. The roof over this section has also collapsed. Also, despite some reports from the news, the Pentagon is primarily *above* ground. Having spent a couple of years working for the Pentagon Renovation program and seeing many areas of the Pentagon few have seen (some not so glamorous like steam tunnels), there are only 2 levels below ground. These levels do not exist under the entire Pentagon. ____________________________________________________________ Wayne Gustavus CCIE #7426,CCNP 703-582-9594 Consultant, email: wgustavus@mentortech.com Mentor Technologies, Inc. www.mentortech.com **** Formerly Chesapeake Network Solutions **** ____________________________________________________________ PGP Key: http://pgpkeys.mit.edu/ -----Original Message----- From: owner-nanog@merit.edu [mailto:owner-nanog@merit.edu]On Behalf Of Alex Kamantauskas Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 12:20 PM To: Howard C. There are conflicting reports if a helicopter or an airliner, or both, hit near the Pentagon, but the building itself does not seem to have taken massive damage.
Report that a plan crashed into the helicopter landing pad, which would account for the conflicting reports. The majority of the Pentagon is underground, and fairly hardened (from what I have been told) -- /ak

Nonsense. The National Military Command Center is on the other side of the building. Surgical?

estimations of 800 dead being reported, the "e to c" rings were comprimised at the pentagon, so the damage we see on the TV is only 20% of the actual problem. --- Terence C. From there, they have come up with an incredibly good attack when measured on a casualty basis - assume 4 airliners, and 3 operatives per airliner. Any military commander would be
This attitude is one that we have to combat if we have any hope of winning a war that involves terrorism. The people responsible were *NOT* sick. They were *very* logical, well-prepared, methodical, and rational. The problem is that they started with their world-view, which included the concept that Western civilization as we know it must be destroyed. proud of an operation that had 12 casualties on their side, and thousands on the enemy's side. Combined with the second-order economic impact of airline shutdown and widespread closures, and the third-order impact of making the enemy nervous, they've suceeded in their goals. We shy away from injuring non-combatant civilians. Under their rules, civilians are not non-combatants because civilians are supporting the Western civilization the terrorists are at war with. Remember that *WE* didn't have qualms about civilians killed in bombing runs on German factories - the terrorists are merely taking a slightly wider definition of combatant... Regarding them as sick/twisted is very dangerous. They're rational, intelligent, and reasoning from different ground rules. And remember - the US dropped 2 nukes. I'm sure the residents of a few Japanese cities thought that Truman was sick and twisted for allowing it to happen. Valdis Kletnieks Operating Systems Analyst Virginia Tech

Exceedingly logical: the reason a clear blue-sky day was picked was twofold: easier to navigate with clearsite rather than in clouds and rain and more importantly, they wanted the world to see the clear picture of what they did, which would not be so clear in a rainy and overcast day. -Hank

Not to be ghoulish, but the traffic impact is looking to be fairly large on the 'net (and on the PSTN in the NYC area).
Just to add a few points:
All VHF TV stations except for CBS 2 are off the air, many radio stations are off the air, and it's largely impossible to get a call in. All bridges and tunnels are closed (which I assume includes the PATH).

I know I and others have said it before, but this is an excellent use for HAM radios. There's no license requirements to use in emergency situations. A trunking capable radio might be good as well to listen in on the emergency systems if they're using trunking. Regards, -- Joseph W. Shaw II Network Security Specialist/CCNA Unemployed. The problem seems to be site limiting, rather than network limiting. i.e., news sites are being overloaded, which is causing slow or no response to http queries due to either server overload (my guess) or news site transit link overload (also possible). This is what seems to be causing lacking of response to news sites, instead of generalized network or peering congestion. It doesn't help that it looks like CNN decided to turn off the "akamization" of their content. This had the immediate effect of helping them get the news up on their site faster, but the lack of Flash Crowd protection really hurt them in the long run. It is definately a Flash Crowd day. :( - Daniel Golding -----Original Message----- From: owner-nanog@merit.edu [mailto:owner-nanog@merit.edu]On Behalf Of deeann mikula Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 10:22 AM To: Charles Sprickman Cc: Avi Freedman; nanog@merit.edu Subject: Re: Horrible world trade center crash, traffic effect On Tue, 11 Sep 2001, Charles Sprickman wrote:
