RE: How many ASs are out there?
Are all these "active"? I know sometimes in this business that mergers and other consolidations cause one company or organization to "fold" more than one autonomous system into a single autonomous system. Is there any way to trace which AS #'s are dormant, retired, no longer in use, etc.? Or is this basically unknowable? Well it looks like they (ARIN) are up to about 11554. This AS was the last created (Friday 10-1) according to the ARIN ASN database accessible from "whois". Hi, Can anyone tell me how many AS are as October of 1998. I know there were around 700 registered ASs in the Internet at the beginning of 1994. [pag 178 of Huitema-93] Is there a web page with that Information? Thanks, Alejandro [Huitema-93] Huitema, Christian "Routing in the Internet", Prentice Hall, 1993, ISBN 0-13-132192-7 <<File: Re_ How many ASs are out there_.TXT>>

Unknowable. You might check ASN#.rdi.int for other published information, if any.

depends on your meaning of active, does it not? if, by active, you mean being used on the global internet today, a dump of a friendly router's bgp data and trivial script should answer that, n'est ce pas? randy junior internet weenie
