Type "whois -h prdb.merit.edu help" for details. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- REPORT CHANGES: (Updated March 24, 1994) Metric:AS(NSS) - Historically, peer networks with multiple connections to AS 690 could only select which of those connections their networks would take by creating "Fake" AS numbers, and using those in the PRDB Metric:AS announcement lists. Some time in the next few weeks we will begin supporting an expanded syntax, where the AS may be followed by an optional NSS peer number in parentheses. Eventually, this syntax will be used to replace most or all of the current Fake ASs. This change will affect *all* places that the announcement lists are reported: all whois queries, all network reports, this "NWG" report, and the Auto-NACR. If you have code which parses these announcement lists, please be aware that that code may need modifications soon. CIDR Reports: There is a new "whois" option to list aggregates in the PRDB: whois -h prdb.merit.edu listaggs will produce a listing of the currently registered aggregates. There is also a new report on "nestings" of PRDB-registered aggregates with their more specific routes: nets.non-classful. Anyone considering configuring an aggregate into the PRDB (and you all should be!) is encouraged to pre-check that aggregate by typing the command: whois -h prdb.merit.edu 'aggchk <agg>' (where "<agg>" is the aggregate description). This command will list all of the other entries in the PRDB that are more specific routes of <agg>, as well as any aggregates all ready configured that contain <agg>. The output includes the AUP and announcement lists of each of the nets printed, with discrepancies flagged. This is the same program that we use for sanity-checking the NACRs that you submit. The archived discussion list "db-disc@merit.edu" exists for discussion of PRDB issues. [ List of nets deleted. ] While these are not in any config file, I can certainly take them out of the PRDB. Would you like any of these components in the RRDB (I think that this is what we use to work with prtraceroute-type tools)??

Actually, I was hoping to keep the data in the local rWhois database and then try batch loading into the RRDB as needed. I think that rWhois may be a better way to keep local data current/correct. Seems to scale better. What are your thoughts? -- Regards, Bill Manning

Sounds like a good way to locally maintain information and to keep the routing registry information current at least for the time being. Not sure which scaling issue you think this solves. --Elise
Scale better from the point of view that the closer you get to the actual source, the better. With the delegation of CIDR blocks to NSPs comes the responsiblity to keep accurate data on assignment and sub-delegation. We can all send in updates to a centralized service (Internic/Merit/RIPE/ APNIC) and then compete for cycles (yesterday the InterNic was not available due to load for about 2 hours, I have had problems with PRDB access due to merit.edu availablity) or we can distribute like DNS does. I think the rWhois is a win. -- Regards, Bill Manning

I agree with the statement per se. Maintenance should always be as close to the source of the data as possible. However this does not mean storage has to be!

The problem with storing data locally is to keep consistency. With the routing registry this is crucial. Only all routing policy descriptions together represent the global routing graph which is needed to answer general questions of policy and consistency. A lot of local checks can be done but that may not be enough. Another difficult issue is accessing the information in different ways. We have found that it is desirable to notify those with particular routing policies in case something affecting them happens elsewhere. Think about routes someone makes decisions on being aggregated or someone starting to announce the same route as someone else. This requires accessing the information based on many -sometimes komplex- keys. A third issue also affecting the allocation registry is that of keeping a trusted record of changes in case of conflicts. Audit trails kept by a reliable and neutral registrar can be very helpful there. To summarise: We will have to move to distributed models eventually. Too centralistic ones will not scale. But this issue is not as clear cut as Bill describes it. At RIPE I expect that we will keep a central registry for some tme to come until we have learned enough about how we use the information to make a decentralised design. There are two reasons we can do this: First we can easily create distributed copies for faster and redundant access. As a matter of fact we have a couple of servers now. One is even in the US near MAE-East (us-whois.ripe.net). Currently this is updated daily. It is easy to make this almost real time if needed. Secondly our update process is totally automated and response times are as good as e-mail connectivity to the NCC. Our users are happy enough with this to let us put plans for a TCP based server on the back burner. Merit is running the same stuff for their new generic routing registry. Cheers Daniel
Well, yes and no. I still think that if you get your customers to register allocations in a local registry -that they own- that it provides them with ownership. As a component of delegation comes the requirement that a registry be run. With the requirement to run a registry comes the mandate to mirror the data back to a central repository. This allows folks to register local routing preference, but this can be overridden higher up. Not to beat the DNS horse too much, but its like we do in-addr assignment now. We will delegate it to you, but reserve the right to keep a secondary of the zone locally. Much of this thinking comes from reviewing rfc1291. More food for thought. -- Regards, Bill Manning

As an unbiased user, I agree :^). Like I mentioned before, we (the InterNIC) plan on using this in the very near future. We would encourage any of you providers to join in on this pilot project that is underway. We think it has a lot of promise as solution to our current operational problems. Bill has seen the light. Once you get the server built (source on rs.internic.net:/pub/rwhois) and populated with data, send a the below template to me (markk@internic.net) and I'll attach you to the root server. Object-Type: referral Referral: Domain-Name: IP-Network: Explanation: Referral: is the DNS hostname of your server along with the port in the format hostname:port. Domain-Name: Part of the DNS tree that you are SOA for. IP-Network: dotted quad address prefix / length Example (RIPE's stub whois server): Object-Type: referral Referral: whois.ripe.net:43 Domain-Name: ripe.net IP-Network: 193.0.0.0/8 IP-Network: 194.0.0.0/8 If you have any questions about rwhois, please send me mail or join the majordomo-administered list (rwhois@internic.net) and ask there. These were to be deleted. You indicated that they we be changed to unconfigured. In no case did I want them back in the configuration. If its not too late, please pull these nets. We have CIDR'ed them for a few months now and won't need to replace them anytime soon. :)
