It looks like a rather large power outage -- we're in South Western Ontario, Canada, and power is out in Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Hespler, and (I'm pretty sure) London as well. Can't say about Toronto. - Damian

I just got off the phone with an old boss of mine. ;-) It would appear that there is a large fire at a ConEd plant that has now caused a cascading power outage in the Northeast. Some more plants may have tripped offline because of the load they absorbed from the loss of the other plant. If I get more information, I'll post. Damian Gerow wrote:

Actually, Mayor Blumberg just told CNN that the smoke being seen at the ConEd plant is normal for this situation. It is also being reported that this whole thing started in Ottawa, or an overload of the Niagra-Mowhak power grid. On Thu, 14 Aug 2003, N. Richard Solis wrote:

I think you have a point. I'm seeing now (AP) that some Canadian officials are saying it was caused by a lightning strike at a Niagra power plant.

but guessing is so much fun... this, from a NERC spokesperson, is about as authoritative as you're likely to get right now. NERC does know their business when it comes to this stuff. "The North American Electric Reliability Council, an industry group responsible for monitoring the integrity of the system, said the power outages were "widespread and appear to be centered around Lake Erie, although they are affecting the entire eastern interconnection." "We do not know the cause at present but will continue to evaluate the situation," said Ellen Vancko, speaking for the council. richard -- Richard Welty rwelty@averillpark.net Averill Park Networking 518-573-7592 Java, PHP, PostgreSQL, Unix, Linux, IP Network Engineering, Security
Despite some news reports, Boston does not seem to be effected by the blackout, nor is MA in general. As I recall, there was some talk earlier this year about connecting the MA grid to the NY area grid - but that talk got stalled. I think people were worried about insufficient connectivity and resources, and getting dragged down by just the kind of scenario we're seeing right now.

The state power official on CNN has just been saying that ConEd shut itself down automatically after something that happened on the Niagara Mohawk power grid that caused the spikes down across the areas affected. They are saying that the black smoke was normal and it isn't on fire. It is certainly on most of the news channels here in the UK at the moment.. Hope the restoration goes speedily for anyone and everyone here who is directly affected or has friends and family that are..

latest word (on cnn.com) is that the niagara-mohawk grid (upstate NY and parts of canada) overloaded and went down. i lost power here twice over a period of about 15 minutes (here being on NYSEG, east of Albany NY, which is joined to Ni-Mo at the hip.) it's back up, but i suspect it'll be shaky for a while. all the burning transformers, etc., are all probably side effects of the major power outage. richard -- Richard Welty rwelty@averillpark.net Averill Park Networking 518-573-7592 Java, PHP, PostgreSQL, Unix, Linux, IP Network Engineering, Security

CNN is reporting a sizable power outage affecting New York City, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto, and Ottawa. The subways have stopped in Manhattan and folks are walking in the streets. A transformer is on fire on 14th street. I just spoke on the phone with a friend in Ann Arbor, and he confirmed the complete power outage there. Sounds huge and probably bigger than just a single plant. Watching the MSNBC/CNN feeds in the NOC shows everyone filing out of NYC on foot b/c of lack of subway and traffic-light-induced gridlock. The primary affect we've seen so far is the drop off in customer traffic based on CPE being offline. No real hit to infrastructure yet. Joel Perez wrote:
