RE: World Trade Center attack
I'm currently experiencing problems getting through to friends/family in NYC
from London.
Anybody else having the same issues ... ?
Both WTC towers are down. My guess is that every person in NYC is calling / being called by their families. The government has been moved to a secure location (probably Mount Thunder.) I cannot get any US news site in my bookmarks. I have heard that cell phone service in DC is down. I would anticipate some difficulty in getting through. e-mails still seem to be working well. Both towers of the World Trade Center are burning after planes flew into them in an apparent suicide attack. Many people are certainly dead. I don't
give a damn what network disruption this causes, but please say a prayer for
those killed.

FYI - Apparently, the Taliban has specifically come out and said that Osama Bin Laden has NOTHING to do with this attack and condemned the bombings. To me this virtually guarantees that he had something to do with it. CNBC is reporting that according to two Sr. US Intelligence officials the current most likely suspect is indeed Osama Bin Laden. If I were the Taliban, I'd be preparing to offer him up. I think the reason they initially indicated that he had nothing to do with it is because they are afraid, as they should be, of a swift reprisal. If they can connect it to him, I would not want to be a resident of Afghanistan. Regards, -- Joseph W. Shaw II Network Security Specialist/CCNA Unemployed. Will hack for food. God Bless. I realize this is a big story and some of you are worried about friends/family but can we please keep posts to this list on-topic? General news about the recent attacks you can get from your TV or news related web sites. Simon. The United States of America (as a whole) is under a state of National Emergency. Many portions of the nation have states of communications emergency in effect. Given the impact of this cowardly act by savage bastards on the nation that not only invented the net but for the larger part *IS* the internet (for every 1 site you can name in NZ that a US citizen would visit on a regular basis, I can name 1000's in the US that NZ citizens visit on a DAILY basis), I submit that ANY news related to this event is on-topic and much more impacting to the operations of the Internet as a whole than arguements about NAT, PMTU, SPAM, blah blah blah. --- John Fraizer EnterZone, Inc On Wed, 12 Sep 2001, Simon Lyall wrote:

...and anyway, this is NANOG. not AUSNOG. Oops, I mean NZNOG. (or APNOG) Please show some patience and tolerance, Simon - this is a major catastrophe. If you see threads that say "WTC" or "World Trade Center", you can safely delete those messages. If it happened in Sydney, I don't think we'd be asking Geoff Huston and the rest of the Aussie operators to tone it down. I've personally been following the threads and find them alternately amusing, tragic, and educational, but YMMV. <del> ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Fraizer" <nanog@Overkill.EnterZone.Net> To: "Simon Lyall" <simon.lyall@ihug.co.nz> Cc: <nanog@merit.edu> Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 7:45 PM Subject: Re: Operational Content only please.

You've got to be kidding. Without being too long-winded, suffice it to say that if you'd recall the significance of this list's acronym, you'd probably realize that many here were acquainted with many in and around the towers. This is much more than "a big story". Many posts regarding the tragedy have been useful, some have been heartening, and some have been downright depressing. It's human nature for people to look to their peers in such situations for sharing info, for solace, etc. This is not a time to be petty, so please don't. : :I realize this is a big story and some of you are worried about :friends/family but can we please keep posts to this list on-topic? : :General news about the recent attacks you can get from your TV or news :related web sites. : :The only stuff here should be here is how it specificly affects Internet :links, sites and traffic. : : :
Also, the long term repercussions of today's events may well be staggering for this group, and our industries as a whole. However, if you do not wish to read it, the subject lines(except for that crap about MAPS) have been pretty obvious. Use the D key, or write a filter. On Tue, 11 Sep 2001, Brian Wallingford wrote:

I don't want to belabor the obvious, but living in afghanistan pretty much sucks already... What appeares to be the largest offensive since the taliban took kabul back in 96 appears to have started in the north. With something like 40% of the population under the age of 14 and the life expectancy pegged at about 45 it's fair to say that most of the population hasn't lived in a time when there wasn't a war going on in afghanistan, since the russians invaded in 1979.

I've actually had very little to no problems making and receiving both cellular and landline calls in and out of Omaha, where I am. YMMW. --Adam -- Adam Korab

Not too surprising really, considering the number of calls that are probably being attempted to try and check on loved ones, friends etc, not to mention what may be reserved or taken over for emergancy agencies and such to communicate. FWIW - my attempts to direct dial in to DC and NYC around 10:30est today from here in Indiana all met with no success - some even got no error recordings - just silence, other met with "all circuits busy" recordings. However, an very helpful AT&T LD operator was able to get a call into DC for me just before 11am, but could not get a circuit into nyc. During the same period, i also received several calls out of both the NYC and DC area, so it appears that the "block inbound / allow outbound" restrictions that were described here earlier worked as intended.
