Botnet's is a very specific subject and Nanog hasn't got the time or resources to fill it. If we say yes to all Botnet subject and discussion the Nanog list would serve no other purpose and non Botnet discussion wouldn't get a look in. There should be a Botnet dedicated list to deal with Botnet issues. As for Fergie no, he was also told to get off the list for posting news articles. There is no excuse for posting news articles, we all have access to the same resources off list as he has in respect of news web sites and RSS feeds, so it really serves no purpose to turn Nanog into a wash of web links to news articles. Can we just have people posting information to Nanog that cannot be obtained elsewhere, which justifies a reason for posting. -Jeb
Can I make a suggestion about inappropriate postings which I GUARANTEE would help a lot?! Can we have a DESIGNATED WHINER, or small list of whiners, who has a CANNED MESSAGE and the option to add some text specific to the message? And can take further suggestions of this sort so people can release that "this message was inappropriate" steam? Then every time someone posts something inappropriate we don't have to wade through 20 or 30 individual "That was inappropriate" messages often resulting in further discussion like oh no that's not the right list it should have been on THIS list ooops I got that address wrong here's the correction oh this one is probably good to use also for that topic can we stop posting URLS can we stop feeding the troll are we sure that's inappropriate yes it is I agree I agree too well maybe sometimes it's not inappropriate what if it involves...oh I think that's also inappropriate well I don't it belongs on...wouldn't this be a better mailing list for that topic oh yes you're right oops I typo'd that URL here's a correction ok this one also who died and made you king I dunno who died and made you king don't feed the troll i just want to say there's too much inappropriate traffic on this list yeah me too too much inappropriate traffic yeah me too I'm considering dropping the list because of the traffic yeah me too why can't that topic go onto this mailing list that's a good list but this might be better oops I typo'd the address here's a correction can we get back on topic is that operational i just thought of something funny to interject in this inappropriate thread how about this on youtube oops the url got cut off here's the corrected url can you tinyurl that can we please get back to some operational topic don't feed the troll blah blah BLAH blah blah BLAH blah blah... It's harsh of me to say, but something I've found in around 25 years of these groups is that there's a certain type of person, and it's a fairly common person, who never has anything to contribute (which is fine) but one inappropriate message and it's like taunting mean cops, watch out, they're all over it and suddenly get chatty. Scolding the vast unknown seems to be their specialty. And their imagined target is just about the least likely to read their fantasy scolding. Too many cops. Way more "that was inappropriate" messages than inappropriate messages. There, now *I* did it. No, I don't volunteer, but maybe one of the cops can. -- -Barry Shein The World | bzs@TheWorld.com | http://www.TheWorld.com Purveyors to the Trade | Voice: 800-THE-WRLD | Login: Nationwide Software Tool & Die | Public Access Internet | SINCE 1989 *oo*

Here's an even better idea -- can all the posts which are about the NANOG list be directed at nanog-futures@nanog.org, a place where they are actually on-topic? Joe
I think you are just a rude person and I have been on this list since about 1995 and there is a real problem with the lastest cpanel upgrade with mysql and it took out 1 of my server configurations, that we host peoples businesses on and I wanted to see how many other isp's were affected and what their solutions were in resolving the problem. That to me is operational impact, since it affects customers on multiple networks. -Henry ----- Original Message ---- From: Jeb Bush <xploitable@gmail.com> To: nanog@merit.edu Sent: Sunday, August 27, 2006 6:34:17 AM Subject: Re: Is it my imagination or are countless operations impacted today with mysql meltdowns On 8/27/06, Larry grunt Brower <grunt@euhosts.net> wrote:

It's not a network/router/BGP/infrastructure problem, though. It's an app problem. So while I don't know Mr. "Bush" and choose not to agree or disagree with him at this time, I'd argue that it might not be strictly on-topic. On the other hand, the information still might be of some use to many of thee people here. **SJS (owie, straddling the fence *hurts*, maybe I should move now) -- Steve Sobol, Professional Geek ** Java/VB/VC/PHP/Perl ** Linux/*BSD/Windows Apple Valley, California PGP:0xE3AE35ED It's all fun and games until someone starts a bonfire in the living room.

So your original post was pure content-free BS, fishing for others to admit (as you only just did) that they'd broken their own MySQL servers by installing a bad 3rd party (cpanel) update. That's not NANOG material. If you'd installed an update on your routers, and they were all freaked out, that might be. If you're having trouble with your hosting software, I suggest inet-access, or in this case, something as application-specific as http://forums.cpanel.net/ might be best. I've never used that site, but it's the first hit if you google: cpanel support forum BTW, I operate several MySQL servers and none of them have anything odd going on this weekend. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jon Lewis | I route Senior Network Engineer | therefore you are Atlantic Net | _________ http://www.lewis.org/~jlewis/pgp for PGP public key_________
