The common answer is to install Linux/Unix/FreeBSD and build a firewall. However, I have recently been surveying the market for DSL gateways. Guess what, ALL of them include some sort of firewall capability and the LinkSys product even includes a 5-way switch ... for under $300! Then there are always Ascend/Lucent Pipeline 130's which includes a router and can gateway ISDN, IDSL, Cable, and DSL. I have a friend that hangs an entire /24 behind one of them.
The Netopia SDSL routers are pretty sweet - do NAT and DHCP internally, and are easy to configure. The 7000 series has a built in CSU/DSU and plugs directly into the DSL line, obviating the need for any other CPE. If I ever get my DSL line :) I'm going to get a Netopia. I know Northpoint specs these for their customers. I know there are also a number of other DSL providers that recommend Netopia. -- ** To all who asked: The Chow now has a good home!
