John, I believe you are referring to HDSL2, which can and does run over single-pair but uses advanced spectral shaping and error correcting mechanisms that weren't invented when HDSL was dreamed up by Bellcore. ./chris

Umm, no. HDSL rides a single pair, and provides more than 1.5Mb.
