Works great when you don't need routing.
Or the default route should point out a different interface. Think e.g. of DHCP used for a management network. You don't want a default route, but in case of a routed management network, signal a set of specific routes. http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-dec-dhcpv6-route-option-05, there we go.
