Any inability to forward IPv6 might not impact the IPv4 peering session and you might run into a situation where the peering session stays up and continues exchanging routes, but the traffic cannot pass (or cannot pass in one direction which is even more fun to diagnose).

The OP mentioned this was just for Akamai (for their DNS mapping). BGP isn't used for forwarding path.
