NTT started building the FTC buildout in the mid-90s. At least that's when the plans were first discussed. They took a bold leap back when most people were waffling about WANs and Bellcore was saying SMDS was going to be the way of the future. Now they reap the benefits, while some of us are left behind in the bandwidth ghettos of North America. :-(
Actually rollout didn't begin until 2002. TV
