There are around ten separate, major (IP) routes into New Zealand using several cable systems and several more satellite operators. New Zealand attracts a tiny minority of traffic within Asia Pacific, and there are innumerous other countries in the region with greater diversity (in both transmission and IP senses). This is by way of illustration; "what's happening across the pacific" is a question with no apparent answer; the implication that there is some common failure point when routing between the US and the entire region is false.
