Doesn't matter. Without the headers most MUAs don't thread it. In the case of Willy's message, the header: In-Reply-To: <mailman.1.1731153601.10419.nanog@nanog.org> Caused my MUA to attempt to thread it with a digest message I never received, hence it started a new thread. Subject change is _usually_ used the other way: to recognize that a change beyond adding "Re: " means that the thread has branched.
