The DNS "industry" is putting us a long way from when RFC 2826 was written.
That's true, but you can't just blow off the majority of people in the world who use languages that you can't write in the ASCII character set. It's a hard problem. I wouldn't say that ICANN's approach has been optimal, but I also wouldn't say there's an obvious solution they've missed.
