For a lot of organizations, one of the values of big dedicated hardware for the network is in the support contracts that are purchased with the hardware. If something breaks, there is someone to call to work with and resolve the situation. In a DIY setup, you're usually on your own. As others have noted, that's fine, if you understand and accept that risk. jms
