Recommendations for public-facing automated status page?
Hi all, curious if anyone has made use of an automated status page system that’s public-facing, and you both like it and find it reasonably priced? This would be one of those systems that makes use of API’s to pull, or we can push to it, to reflect the nearly real time state of circuits, systems, API’s, etc. I’ve found numerous options out there, but most seem to have ridiculous pricing around allowing people to subscribe to the status page, or even worse if you begin to make use of SMS notifications. That SMS pricing is often two orders of magnitude higher for the same quantity of transactional texts as you’d pay to have them sent through a dedicated SMS provider. Thanks, David
We use BetterStack.com. They do offsite Ping monitoring and then reflect that in your custom status page that they build and host. One thing I like about it is even if we have a major outage, customers can still get this Status page since it’s hosted offsite. There’s not really a way for you to feed your own internal probes to it, but you can put up bulletins and notices. Our users really like it. And BetterStack has a permanent no-cost subscription for a small number of sensors, I think six or seven, so you can easily try it out for free. But you’ll quickly discover that you want to monitor more, and it’s very reasonably priced. -mel

They actually have a zillion service offerings, but what you’re looking for is the “up time monitoring“ Service -mel via cell

I personally really like Uptime Kuma (https://github.com/louislam/uptime-kuma). It’s open-source and self hosted. Atlassian bought statuspage a while ago, so it’s now Atlassian Statuspage. You can see it in the wild at https://status.digitalocean.com/. Incident.io is also increasingly popular, too. Openstatus and cachet are popular OSS systems, but self-hosted. If your SMS provider supports sending messages after being triggered by webhook, which Amazon Pinpoint and Twilio do, then Statuspage and others can be used with your own SMS provider. Depending on what you're after, there's a number of options. There are very simple "turnkey" solutions like UptimeRobot and StatusCake that do periodic ping/traceroute from a single location. I stray from host-your-own stuff for monitoring (i.e. UptimeKuma) because you either host it in your network or at a remote location (single origin). Single origin pings may be good enough for public status page, but you'll be blind to issues that are regionally isolated. Hosting a public status page inside your network has the obvious caveat of potential unreliability in an outage. I use a thing that polls globalping.io into Prometheus alongside my other monitoring data. I like that, and it's exposed some weird issues with certain upstreams. If you want a managed version of that, there is Betterstack, which is more featureful than UptimeRobot/StatusCake, and has the public status page bundled in.
