We're Back! Outages mailing is now open!

Hi all, We know the wait has been longer than expected and we sincerely thank you for your patience and support. After a lot of hard work behind the scenes, we're thrilled to finally announce that outages mailing list is live at its new home at Packet Clearing House. Please see below instructions for subscription. This launch would not have been possible without the generous donation of time and resources from Bill Woodcock and his dedicated team (Robin McNeill, Andras, Kabindra Shrestha and others who I may have missed) who worked tirelessly to set up the infrastructure. I would also like to thank Bryan Fields for his expertise in Mailman3, which ensured that outages mailman3 platform met the NANOG best practices standard. Their hard work truly made all the difference. Yes. Virendra, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that the intention is for people to post _new_ outage notifications to outages@outages.org, but that _replies to_ and discussion of those go to outages-discussion@outages.org. So, if you want to follow and participate in discussion of the outage events, subscribe to both lists. If you’re just interested in seeing new events, but not ongoing discussion of them (or if you’re using automation to track events) just subscribe to outages@outages.org and you should see a much higher signal-to-noise ratio (addressing the many requests for this over the years). -Bill

If you were subscribed to the old list, and if you were sorting/filing incoming messages based on the List-Id header (per RFC 2919) then it's possible that the return message from Mailman asking for subscription confirmation went to wherever you were/are sending "outages" list traffic. This happens because Mailman -- in my view, erroneously -- applies the List-Id header to administrative traffic such as subscription confirmation requests, subscription confirmations, etc. I believe I raised this bug to the Mailman folks about 15 years ago, but it's still present. (Why "erroneous"? Because such messages are not actually list traffic and shouldn't be marked as such. Not only does doing so risk their mishandling, but it conflates messages which should always be private with messages which are available to everyone on the mailing list.)
I also don't see any method of support on the signup or the sign-in pages. So I had to turn here for help.
I haven't tested it yet, but I would presume that the standard -owner address (per list) is supported, e.g. outages-owner@outages.org. (If it's not supported, then it darn well should be, for exactly this reason.) Incidentally, one of my users subscribed to "outages" earlier this morning and that process appeared to work correctly. However, a followup subscription to outages-discussion did *not* work correctly: no request-for-confirmation was issued, the address was just subscribed. This needs to be fixed ASAP for what I trust are obvious reasons. ---rsk

I personally would STRONGLY advocate for setting the default reply-to: for outages@ to go to -discussion. This has been an issue that plagued the old outages list for years and never got better. It actually got worse over time. A brand new list seems like a great time to change this behavior, at least to me. Aside from that, thanks for the work behind the scenes to get things up and running again. ---- Andy Ringsmuth andy@andyring.com
