Does anybody have any experience with the MD400/MD450 appliances? Good/bad/indifferent Do they do anything I can't do myself with Sophie, Cyrus IMAP, Postfix and SpamAssassing on a decent PC? Would you recommend them for high volume VISP mail hosting? (around 600k domains) Thanks for any opinions anybody has. P.

We run mail for a few more domains / users than that, but use more than just a small PC. We do use postfix (and qmail, and courier imap, and rbldns, and a few other open source tools) though, not Mirapoints. srs -- srs (postmaster|suresh)@outblaze.com // gpg : EDEDEFB9 manager, outblaze.com security and antispam operations

The PC I was thinking of using for this would be the same spec as the Mirapoint boxes (dual 2.8GHz P4, 2GB RAM, Lots of U320 RAID). I also wouldn't be using a single PC. Just curious as to whether anybody had experience with these systems as they appear reasonably cheap for what they do (Well, compared to MCIS/Openwave/ Nexor/Insert$PROPRIETARYMTA). As goes users, I honestly don't know how many hide behind those domains, but around 8-10m mails a day at present are hitting this system P.

Thought so - but if you spend some time putting things together, you get more bang for your buck from postfix + courier + other stuff. Scale horizontally - more cheaper boxes rather than fewer pieces of big iron. You'll be able to build something quite large that way.

Should be quite doable. -- srs (postmaster|suresh)@outblaze.com // gpg : EDEDEFB9 manager, outblaze.com security and antispam operations

Bad and expensive.

Check out IronPort. They've done a lot of wild stuff to make their boxes hugely fast.

For commercial ware - Ironport is good. There is also Theo Schlossnagle's ecelerity - http://www.postalengine.com/products.html -- srs (postmaster|suresh)@outblaze.com // gpg : EDEDEFB9 manager, outblaze.com security and antispam operations

Yah, thats been my experience, its probably the only commercial solution I'd buy. Its a complete platform - Hardware, OS, Software Also, Ironport is supporting some sort of "Bonded Sender" program, so that may be a key thing to look for as well when buying something like this.

We use their bonded sender plus (a subset of bonded sender that is 100% confirmed optin). -- srs (postmaster|suresh)@outblaze.com // gpg : EDEDEFB9 manager, outblaze.com security and antispam operations

We are using Barracuda Networks instead, but it's also a complete platform with hardware, OS, and software. So far it's doing the job very well, and we are one week into our trial so far.
