[tool] octomon: a terminal network monitor to analyse your Internet connection
Hi all, I'm Simon and I work at Cloudflare. I have leaned on the NANOG archives for years when chasing odd behaviour between a host and the wider internet, so I wanted to give something back and share a tool I built, in case it is useful to anyone here or to the people you support. https://octomon.dev octomon is an open-source terminal dashboard for the end-host view of a connection: per-target latency, loss and jitter, per-process and per-remote bandwidth, Wi-Fi signal, resolver health, path MTU, clock offset, and the ISP path from traceroute. I was sick of running a load of separate tools and scripts, piecing together the information to determine what was going on with my Internet connectivity. I also wanted to learn Rust, so this was a chance to tidy up all the scripts I've built over the past 30 years into a single cli tool for helping me diagnose my device to Internet connectivity. Quick video of me walking through it here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECwBaSvUwfk Thanks, Simon
Hi Simon - This is awesome!! Well done and thanks. Heath On Mon, Oct 26, 2026 at 12:40 AM Simon Thorpe via NANOG < nanog@lists.nanog.org> wrote:

This is exactly the kind of tool that I've been looking for, over a period of years and even decades. I just didn't realize it. Thank you, I will be using this tool. -- Brad Knowles <brad@shub-internet.org> Bio: https://bradknowles.me/
Simon, Good on you! I installed Octomon yesterday. Fantastic tool, thanks for giving back to the community. Cheers, Harry On Sun, Oct 25, 2026 at 10:40 AM Simon Thorpe via NANOG < nanog@lists.nanog.org> wrote:

Realy? I wont say what Google kept correcting it to. Maybe it says more about me then the project. Either way this project is awsome and it's been runing since yesterday morning. On Mon, Oct 26, 2026 at 1:47 PM Norman Jester via NANOG < nanog@lists.nanog.org> wrote:

Very cool. Can verify that it builds and runs on FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p6. (requires root for ICMP privs) On Sun, Oct 25, 2026 at 9:40 AM Simon Thorpe via NANOG <nanog@lists.nanog.org> wrote:
